Casting and characterizations are an absolute mess

For the hell of it against my better judgement I decided to re-watch an episode on this live action adaptation (a loose usage of the term) and one of the worst offenses of the whole thing is its casting and characterizations. This should be obvious to any fan of the original, and probably still to new comers alike. Jon Cho as Spike is a pretty ridiculous casting choice for a few reasons, but as the primary main character it really sets the whole production on the wrong foot. Spike is a man in his late 20s in the original, with a laid back "what ever happens, happens" attitude that mirrors his kung fu martial arts style of always improvising and going with the flow. Cho is in his 50s and brings his typical sarcastic douchebag quality which he applies to all his roles, here's Spike being no exception. Jet is OK casting imo, though his actual acting leave a lot to be desired he still embodies the characterization well enough. Faye is abysmal, on and off screen. In the source material she is a brash, selfish, and calculating manipulator but hides a softer more vulnerable side and feminine charm. In this version her actress brings all of the bad qualities and amplifies them while completely squelching any more endearing ones. Her characterization reduces her to a loud, irritating and rather nasty member of the group. I must admit that despite trying my best I could not get far enough into the series to meet ein and Ed, but from what I've both seen and heard it's no better. Moving on to Vicious and Julia…Oh boy. Vicious was a cold and competent psychopath hungry for power and dominance, but going about his way in a quiet and ruthless manner, in this he is painted as a man baby with fragile ego always on the brink of cracking. Julia was a strong and stoic femme fatale with a soft womanly appeal to contrast herself, in this She is the secret mastermind girl boss who is actually manipulating the strings all along, puppeteering Vicious and out to kill Spike and dominate the syndicate…WHAT?! The minor characters are also all so botched to the point of being unrecognizable, but that;s a drop in the bucket compared to the assassination of character done on all the main cast. The producers, directors, and cast should be ashamed of this. This live action adaptation was decades in the making and anticipated just as long, now I have to imagine as a result of this utter failure there may never been any more from the world of Cowboy Bebop to come.
