Usually wars start for multiple reasons. They need the rich and the poor to buy into the idea. What the rich care about is usually the opposite of what the poor care about.
I think the real probably is how people boil issues of historical significance down to one variable so it's easily digestible by idiots. This is how history repeats itself. This is how we think people of today are better than people of not long ago. If they can dumb us down so we don't think about this stuff, they can get us to buy into any narrative as long as it's juicy enough.
