Well, Pirates of the Caribbean was one of the first of Disney veering away from only producing G or PG rated films for familiez of small children.

but it's still a kids movie. it's all light adventure with silly pirates, and no real violence or sex or anything adult. its' basically hook except in live action.

How do you figure? Those movies have extremely violence in them and disturbing images. Kids arent into that. Plus the movies are very long and have complicated plots.
Its not even about the good guys versus the bad guys, and there is no life lesson to be learned. No characters children could relate to either.

wait are we taking about the pirates of the caribbean movies? they are hardly violent at all. if they have violence it's very brief and not shown in detail.

Uh there was a lot of violence. Swash buckling, cannon balls, and zombie pirates. The other movies have even more very scary visuals and gratuitous violence.
