I think Ian McShane's first appearance is awesome and intriguing.
I really get scared by his character.
But then he's doing that thing with the sword I really have a problem with that. It sort of makes him look stupid and destroys the otherwise respectful appearance.
He's sort of twisting the sword and the ropes start moving, then sailors are swung around screaming and terror no, intimidation destroyed. Making him sort of looking like a fool. By the way, is he some sort of a witch or magician?
I also don't like the part when he uses the flamethrower to kill a sailor. It's meant to portray him as very evil, the opposite happens.
It just sort of sinks this man's authority to a whimsical terrorist.
It would have been WAY more powerful if he just used his voice and mannerism and that awesome authority to just intimidate his crew, slowly creeping in fear.
He could easily have been the best villain in all four movies.
You could probably describe that scene as being Disneyfied

Blackbeard was THE lamest villain of this series, he was completely forgettable and was just "evil to be evil"

        I agree with OP.
I think he was easily way cooler villain than Davy Jones and I get an impression he could eat DJ (and pretty much everyone else) alive.
Ian McShane really owned the film, he is a legendary pirate.
He should be brought back in more than just this film.
I also do not understand why people diss this installment so much. As the rest, it's a legitimately awesome movie in the franchise which I do enjoy watching each and every time.
