That reviewer is a try hard. Trying hard to be too cool for school. The pilot episode was very well-conceived and presented. I'm no fanboi of the WD universe, I appreciate good story telling.
Seems like the reviewer wrote the review but hadn't paid attention to the entire episode. It is explained how Daryl got in/on that small boat.

In spite of your rather negative review I'm giving this show a decent viewing until I make up my mind whether I'm going to stick with Daryl or give up on him in disgust.
