        My full review:
There isn't a more relevant or timely piece of fiction to be found in 2025 than Mary Shelley's 1818 novel
        Frankenstein
. Writing towards the beginning of the industrial revolution, Shelley's book - in part - warns of the unintended consequences of progress for the sake of progress. Those themes weren't particularly relevant when Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee starred in their (rightfully) iconic adaptations, but now as society stares down the barrel of an AI apocalypse Shelley's original work is more pertinent than ever.
And Guillermo del Toro has captured all of these themes in his screenplay, ignoring all previous cinematic depictions and finally giving the world a proper adaptation of one of the English language's best novels. For his portrayal of The Creature, Jacob Elordi deserves an Oscar. But his is but one of many amazing performances here. And it probably goes without saying for a del Toro movie, but the production design is completely on point.
This is a wonderful movie and an important one. Although I have some big ones left to see, this is my favorite of 2025 so far.

Just started it, and the opening looks like a video game.

That's the prelude I think. The second part is where you'll see what I was talking about with Jacob Elordi. Also, I'm sure you're there already or close…

As Sophie pointed out on my thread, Mia Goth is also really great here. I assume you've watched the Pearl trilogy?

It's weird. I both like the aesthetic, but at the same time the set design looks….cheap. like the sometimes 2 dimensional pillars. 😳 And still, sometimes, video game style movement.

Is he conducting the experiments yet? (I don't think that's a spoiler 😂) Anyway, the design of his lab is super cool. Very dilapidated though.

One of the other major subtexts of the book is fatherhood. Mary Shelley's mother died in childbirth and she didn't always have the greatest relationship with her father. So a lot of that made it into the characters and Victor is repeating the cycle with his "child."
