…Ringwald was/is a very talented actress. It was nice to see her presence in this series and she played Dahmer's stepmother well with what she worked with, but it was really a thankless role considering her skill as an actress.
I never understood why her career took a dive and she hasn't been utilized more. Was she difficult to work with perhaps?

Her and John Hughes had a falling out. She didn't want to keep working with him after 3 films and wanted to act in more mature roles. She wasn't also happy that he wouldn't let her play the role of Sloane in Ferris Bueller, which led to her turning down the lead role in Hughes' Some Kind of Wonderful. Their partnership and friendship came to an end after this and she found it difficult to get (good) work without his help.
Turning down lead roles in Pretty Woman and Ghost didn't help things either. -

Thank you for that insight.
Mia Sara was a horrible actress and I think Ringwald would have worked in well as Ferris's gf, however, Ferris was a star vehicle for Broderick and Ringwald was already a name by then. Hughes may have thought it might have taken something away from Broderick.
Some Kind Of Wonderful
is the gender flip side of
Pretty In Pink
, red hair and all, and I also think it is the better film of the two. Did she want Lea Thompson's role? Lea was perfect and her acting chops were already proven in
Back To The Future
.
Just found this in the trivia of IMDB:
Refused the Lea Thompson role in Some Kind of Wonderful (1987), ending her successful business relationship with John Hughes, who was furious.
Mia Sara beat Molly Ringwald to the role of Sloane Peterson because, according to John Hughes, she had elegance. According to Ringwald, "John wouldn't let me do it. He said that the part wasn't big enough for me."
Molly was excellent in one of my favorite t.v. films
Surviving - '85
about teenage suicide and it is one of the best on this subject matter.
I can't really see Ringwald in
Pretty Woman
and Roberts was perfect in her own star making vehicle. She may have done well in
Ghost
, but that was well cast as it was.

She didn't show up until the third episode I think it was. I was thinking that she was Joyce Dahmer at first and didn't realize that was Penelope Ann Miller until I saw her name in the credits. Ringwald has that distinct pouty lipped gummy smile. Odd though that she was cast in this. I hope it gives her a bit more exposure though.
I was never a huge fan of Miller, although she is a competent actress. I never got why De Palma cast her in
Carlito's Way - '93.
