The reason why Bill Fordham left
Barbara Weston
?
It is never mentioned in the movie why Ewan's character left
Julia Robert's
character.
She is presented as strong woman, she even declares herself as one who is in the charge of family.
But to me, she is more like drama queen in the closet.
For me personally, I know these kind of difficult people in my life and it's so difficult to handle them and deal with stuff they spurt out in communication with them.
It is so depressing and heart-breaking seeing those people settled on their thrones making lives a living hell for people around them.
I wouldn't label those people as strong and brave.
I think her character should be labeled more as:- selfish
if there is a problem she never stops and think about the other person, it's always her emotions that must be protected - self centered
it's easy for her not to stop and think how her behavior effects people around her - annoying and irritating
putting people down is difficult to bare, watch and hear all the time - difficult
if you need some issue to handle with these kind of people like her, you'll have no chance to get to point where you can agree so both parties are satisfied - these kind of people must win and their word must be the last one - rude
if cursing in front of a child or adult is normal behavior then it wouldn't be cursing, it would be considered normal part of conversation. cursing is a way to attack someone and she use it plenty - short tempered
with all these traits, these difficult people will never stop and think about the reason why something happen. it will never occur that someone didn't have bad intentions even though they may seem like that on the surface
in real life, yes - these kind of difficult people will get a (better) job, they will get more things than shy and considered people,
but they will get isolated with time, people in general will avoid them when they show their real face to them, and most importantly, bad things will happen to them. not at first but the web and complexity of broken relationship and settings they leave behind will finally broke apart and fall upon them.
these kind of people present themselves as strong due to fact they have courage to say and do things other people would never say or do,
and it seems to everyone that these people are smart and intelligent simply because they appear they have answer and resources to do anything - and they do.
not because they are smart or their actions are intelligent - but because they simply go and do stuff, they make some actions, where most people are afraid to do.
they'll never stop and think did i offend someone, will my actions hurt the other person - they'll just do it.
so in the end - they will hurt the others -
and unless they bribe close people around them, these difficult people will be abandoned.
- selfish

He cheated on her, yes, but their daughter left with him in the end. His wife had turned into her mother as a bitter, vicious take no prisoners harrigan. I doubt that started with his affair.
I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else -

They weren't abandoning Barb, never to see her again. It was the day following the daughter's late night pot-scapade. Her father was taking her back to her life, away from all the dysfunction of The Plains.
Are you implying it was Barb's fault her husband cheated on her with a younger woman? -

we never find out why
It's all in the script. Barb suggested that Bill was having his
fifth puberty
. We know that he had lost a lot of weight since at least 2 people commented upon it. Barb said he was dyeing his hair. Bill told Barb that she is
a pain in the ass

I agree, OP, that they are not strong. If they were, they would overcome their childhoods and be decent people. Barbara is very much like her mother - it isn't all background and pills - some of that is actual personality and Barbara inherited it.
