There was a good reason for that scene though. Barbara knew that Ivy was about to tell Violet that she was in love with Little Charles. Barbara knew that Violet would then tell Ivy that Little Charles was actually her half-brother. And Barbara knew that that would shatter Ivy. Barbara was trying to head it off and change the subject any way she could, referring to Ivy as a lesbian, trying to provoke a fight with Violet by yelling "Eat the fish, bitch !" and breaking dishes. But she failed. Violet revealled the secret, and Ivy, distraught and devastated, fled away.
