I agree but was curious to know why the other poster felt she was awful.

It doesn't matter what you 'buy.' How would you have her portray her 'truth-telling' any different?

Of course it matters what I "buy". As a movie goer I want to be convinced of the character's personality, foibles. I wasn't convinced by Streep at all. I saw an actress giving a performancea lousy one at that.

You may not have 'bought' the character no matter how it was played. It wasn't written for you to 'buy' into. It is presentational, not representational.
Mery Streep's character talks about 'truth-telling.' But what we need is comfort. We need air-conditioning, whe need shade from the sun. We look to other human beings for that comfort, particularly family. When we don't get it, it becomes a searing pain. Her character has a death instinct. And when she shows off her instinct openly, it serves to hurt the people around her.

no no no no no no no no.
              lemme try and explain.
( trust me .. this movie is so close to my heart i am being constructive)
i was dead convinced with ur post till i saw this
And when she shows off her instinct openly, it serves to hurt the people around her.
I think their were two parts to it
FIRST : truth telling (that u have very well explained)
SECOND : Her Arrogance and Vanity ( which i think u completely missed )
I am cutting the long expression very very short..
Everybody was hurt not because she SPOKE THE TRUTH (which she did for sure).. but because of the vanity and arrogance that was overpowering her ..
YES, for sure she was the STRONG ONE . but "her" taking too much pride in it was uncalled for.
              short recap.

I'm certainly glad that it's just an opinion, as everyone is entitled to one. It's not a fact, but it's my opinion that it was actually one of her best performances of recent years, and evidently so did a lot of the viewing public and the people in film that nominate people for their performances, as she had nominations all over the place.
Again, everyone is entitled to their opinions, no matter how seemingly different they might be from the general consensus.

I'm convinced that Streep could fart on the screen for ninety minutes w/o saying a word and they'll STILL give her a nomination. It's almost a reflex action. What she is is an impressionist, not an actress.

So, essentially, what you're saying is this:
"Oh, that Meryl Streep, she's such a phony baloney!"
Are we beginning to see the possibilities here?

What I'm saying is that she's a mimic, passing herself off as an actress. And her histrionics in every movie, her calculations (now I'll move my head, now I'll scratch my nose, now I'll cough, etc.) is very annoying and tiresome.

I'm not a expert on actors, but so what? Is having every move calculated an exclusive trademark to Meryl Streep? If so, then she deserves something other than her three Oscars, namely more money via lawsuits. If not, I would assume all those "calculated moves" are something that is taught.
Are we beginning to see the possibilities here?

I never said it was "exclusive" to her. There are a lot of phony actors and actresses out there (Tom Hanksanother media sacred cow comes to mind)but Streep is definitely the one who has had her ample ass kissed the most by the press.

If Meryl Streep is having her ass kissed, it's by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as she has gotten more than her share of Oscar nods over the years- this movie included (she is over-the-top here). As for the press, she deserves every accolade she's received. She's on a very short list of great American actors. Period.
And if Meryl Streep is guilty of being a "mimic", then so are non-Americans Ewan McGregor and Benedict Cumberbatch. And Juliette Lewis in her last scene when she leaves in the middle of the night.
Are we beginning to see the possibilities here?

Agree! What a tricky scene for Juliette to pull off convincingly. I bet that necessitated a few million takes. She certainly excelled at her craft - in every scene she had.
I consider every actor in this movie absolutely integral to the end Work of Art - not a hair out of place .. no doubt painstakingly hand picked with outstanding performances by each and every one!
                                    What a brilliant Masterpiece.

Once again her "acting" nods are bestowed b/c of a fawning press which would praise this Rich Little if she farted on the screen for 90 minutes. The only Streep performance I thought was any good was A Cry In The Darkwhere the character she was portraying was as annoying as she is.
