Violet is like a spider sitting in the center of its web. She's aware of every little movement along that web, and she's quick to pounce.
This is a vile woman. Over-the-top vile. That's the way the character is written. Streep nails it.
This. I thought she was excellent, she's supposed to be like that. She was an evil woman.

Every moment Meryl Streep is on the screen she is Riveting!!
I can't think of another actress who could have pulled off this complex character so convincingly. She touched me deeply, especially with her story about the boots - giving her girls insight into her childhood. I cried - and that takes some doing..
What a Mega Mega-Star!!
It gets better on re-watch btw. There is so much to have to absorb on the first take.
It must have been amazing on the set . watching this Pro do her thing.

Of course Meryl Streep is recognized and fawned over for her acting. You know why???? Because she never stops "acting". That's what a Streep movie (most of which are box office duds)entails. Every gesture is totally calculated and predesigned-nothing flows naturally or organically.
It reminds me of the way people used to gush over Hitchcock and his "style". Of course one noticed Hitchcock's stylehe shoved his "style" in your face. You couldn't help noticing it.
Same thing with the impressionist Streep. -

I'm not going to argue with you about Meryl S., as your opinion of her, her acting, and her performance in this roleall that has been made quite clear, along with the evident truth that your opinion won't be swayed. I happen to feel she was not right for the role of Violet, as she was written in the play (Estelle Parsons, whom I saw in he national tour, was perfection), and I wasn't thrilled with some of the changes made in the screenplay; I'm still not sure what my opinion of Ms. Streep's performance in this was.
ANYway~~~You've been quite clear about Ms. Streep and Tom Hanks. I would like you to name some other screen actresses and actors, preferably comparable in age (though you can wander off from that, too), whom you admire, and perhaps tell a bit about what makes you find them pleasing as actors. I hope you will, as I'm truly interested.
Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD. -

I just watched the film again and was overcome by disappointment in Streep, so I'll answer that. Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Jessica Lange, Michelle Pfieffer, Olympia Dukakisbecause when they act I forget who they are and only see the character.
With Meryl, I never forget she's Meryl. It's almost like the way I felt with John Wayne. I never liked him, either, because he never stopped being John Wayne to me, no matter who he played. I hope that makes sense. -

Julia Roberts :
[
on working with Meryl Streep
] "I've never seen anyone work harder than she does. She doesn't just snap her fingers and be a genius. To work with Meryl Streep is a dream come come true for anyone. To know her is an honor. She is such a beautiful person and it was intimidating, certainly to be in these scenes with her. Choking her, and things like that, were not how I pictured it going in my mind all these years. I thought we'd be together, having tea and speaking fabulous accents, all dressed up. But there we were - I'm sweating and have on a big butt pad. Meryl sees not only what I need as an actor but what I need as a girl in the world. She provides that, all the time. No wonder she's sleeping. She's exhausted after taking care of me."
[
on filming August: Osage County (2013
)] "Here's the thing. Here's the crux of the biscuit, if you will. We worked our asses off. Because there was no other way to do it. I've never worked so hard in my life and I've given birth to three children. It was like a mountain to climb every single day and the only way to climb it, we discovered, was holding hands - whether we liked it or not."

I agree, Meryl Streep was overacting. I understand that the character is supposed to be over the top, but her performance was just too exaggerated. You can not only see how she's thinking about every little thing she is going to do, but you can also see how brilliant she thinks she is for it.
She never "became" this character to the point that I could forget that she's the one performing. All I could see is MERYL. Now Meryl puts her hands over her face again. Now Meryl flashes her eyes this way. etc.
I kept thinking Margo Martindale could have played this role much better than Meryl. She's fantastic. And that Meryl's acting seemed like an overblown imitation of how Margo might have played it. -

Great, I'm glad there's at least one person out there who thinks like I do. I've always thought that Streep was merely an impressionist anywaya female Rich Little posing as an actress. But she's so lionized by the adoring press (and always has been) that it's tough for a lot of people to see what's obvious.

I just watched it again. I agree with you. I can't stand her for the most part. No matter who she plays, to me she's Meryl Streep.
When I think that this is the woman with the best chance of passing the number of Oscars won by Katharine Hepburn, I want to puke. -

I'm surprised at the hate. I do think that Meryl gets a certain amount of, pardon the language, ass-kissing, but I thought she was phenomenal in this role. If you've ever known someone that is a manipulative person, particularly if they are an addict, I think she nailed it.
I thought Ivy was great too, and felt so bad for her. She was the one that stayed behind, and continued to be treated like she was nothing. I saw other remarks in the board that said she was weak, but she took care of get parents when the others didnt, and she got a guilt trip from Barb about leaving Vi behind. I don't really know what the right thing to do woukd have been re: LCR and Ivy, but she deserved some happiness. She already knew they were cousins, and that they couldn't have children, so why say anything? The matriarch, I suppose, couldnt help it (whether or not she knew about the hysterectomy, I'm not sure, but I don't think so). -

I also think it's ironic that people can be so hateful towards each other on a board about a movie. Kind of encompasses Vi's character too? I wish people could be more respectful towards each otherbib their discourse, and I recognize I will probably my amount of hate for saying it.
