    He had to fake his death - otherwise he would be putting them all in danger. He had screwed over so many bad guys during the series, and when these guys were to be released, some of them would definitely come looking for revenge - he already put Elizabeth in danger once through Keller. Pink Panther were the biggest target yet, and even on the inside they could probably still get some old friends on the outside to pull off their revenge when they found out who set them up. Neal simply made the best of a bad situation.

      exactly. neal faked his death to protect peter, el, the baby, moz, Diana & theo, jones and june. this was foreshadowed in the scene in an earlier ep while he's at a chess table with keller - keller explains to him that once neal takes the pink panthers down, they will come after everyone neal cares about and kill them all, regardless of them being in prison.

          For a show that really pushed the storylines, I was a bit disappointed with the ending. The build-up was great, the faking his death, great, but why fast-forward a year, and why leave Mozzie in the dark not knowing that Neal was alive?
          The ending seemed too quick for me and should have ended with Neal sitting by a pool in his sunglass and shorts sipping a drink in the sun waiting for Mozzie to arrive. I know is a bit Shawshak Redemption-esque, but I think it would have been better than the fake backdrop in Paris.

            I figured neal went to paris to start fresh and maybe eventually pursue sara who was in london.

              Mozzie wasn't in the dark. One can argue he knew all along, or maybe somewhere along the line. It's obvious he eventually joined Neal. They will continue their shenanigans.
              It was a great ending I agree. I love your "Shawshank" type of scenario. Mozzie leaving the wine bottle for Peter was in the same vein tho.

                Mozzie definitely knew and he let Peter know that he knew. A few minutes before, Peter had talked to Mozzie and Mozzie showed him the card Neal had used to win the three-card Monte when they first met. When Peter went into the container at the end the card was in there.

                  Also, Mozzie gave Mozart, something he kept and was emotionally attached to for around 45 years, to baby Neal. To me that was the ultimate clue that he was leaving for Paris where he'd reinvent himself and join Neal.
                  Do you think it was Mozzie who left the wine at the Burkes' steps?

                    he had to leave Mozzoe behind, Mozzie would have pulled Neal back into the "life". he did let Peter know he was alive, and he was going to do what he had told Mozzie he would do, start helping with banks and businesses upgrade their security.
                    he had told Peter and more than once, he trusted Peter and that Peter was his best friend.
                    Neal HAD to leave, i don't think he took any money from "The Heist-the Last Score", he had his stashes and was able to leave and start up.
                    everyone he knew would have been endangered if he had not gone. and he did not want anything to tie back to him again, so he could not have taken much with him.
                    the story line had him returning a lot of things he had taken in his "career" and i also noticed everyone had been killed or imprisoned that could have done him real harm, Keller, Rebecca, Hagan..

                      Mozzie WASN'T in the dark. How do you think Peter got the bottle of wine? How do you think the Queen of Hearts wound up in the storage room? Who do you think took care of Neal after his faked death and gave him money to go to Paris (undoubtedly some of the unrecovered $23 million).

                        I loved the ending myself, with how the very last part leaves it up for anyone's interpretation (could be a thief, I think he's an artist and freelance consultant). Even though I'm a guy who's usually not emotional this episode got me tears eyed at many parts of it

                          absolument!
                          in so many ways..
                          & with so many deeper elements if you wanted to see & go with them..
                          such as rebirth concepts & imagery..
                          i do agree avec la fin.. as some of you have mentioned.. ^^
                          {neal's reasons.. mozzie knowing being involved.. etc.}
                          {i will write more with my original post about the series which i started only several months ago..}
                          for me the ending was clear in the translation of the title 'au revoir'..
                          which is not just 'goodbye'.. despite what it may say if you simply translate..
                          'voir' is 'to see'.. re-voir.. so.. see again.. if you follow my thoughts on the thorough translation..
                          even before i watched it i had some strong ideas & i was not disappointed at all..
                          it was magnificent & magickal to me.. ^
                          ^
                          :::: love and peace ::::
