However, if I'm honest, any Alien movie without Ripley just doesn't carry the same weight (for me), even though I still enjoyed most of them. Ripley
IS
the franchise, which might also explain why those without her didn't shine quite as bright.

Yep. Ripley and the Aliens go together like salt and pepper. I love the mystery and absolute 'alienness' of the creatures. I don't want them explained and de-mystified. I don't want to see them used in some sort of 'let's get the assholes who manipulated and exploited us' scenario. FFS leave them alone!

That's what caused the emotional involvement in the first one, because Mother changed the directives and Ash overwrote the codes to comply that the crew was expendable, and the alien lifeform was to be brought home at all costs. For what? Well, we later discover, to experiment and try and weaponize them.
Yes, we humans. We're not explorers. We're invasive destroyers who just can't leave "other" alone. Grr….

They are not canon.
Rip, Hicks and Newt all make it safely back to earth where they become a family.
Everything after that are just dreams and nightmares of theirs or just don't exist at all.

How many more times is the same story going to be told. Space crew land on a planet inhabited by xenomorphs. It stalks them, takes some people to he hosts for the baby, and kills the rest of the crew one by one until there is one or two survivors to be hosts for another xenomorphs to terrorize the crew of the rescue ship.
Okay okay I got it now. Even if James Cameron were too direct, I still would be bored. -

I have seen them (I watched them at 1AM UK time today)
Erm…it's a TV show type story and so it'll be fairly episodic in pace. It's a divided memory story with identity at its core (And a big scary beastie kicking about) but certainly has legs and promise
But 2 episodes aren't enough to do the full story justice.
Without spoiling anything all I can say is that they missed out by not having the well known Thai mannequins in it (Yet, at least).
I think you'll enjoy it well enough but be wanting for more, now
