in academia they are crazed hardcore about ideas since thats their bread-and-butter.
in the real world ideas arent patentable, but its the execution of that idea.
Im not an entertainment lawyer, but Im sure they went over all the legalities of BRs take on that idea before they spent a penny on actual footage. -

I read recently that the author of Hunger Games had not even heard of the movie, until someone brought it to her attention. Whether that is actually true or not is everyone's guess, except for Collins, of course.

If you break it down to it's key elements and then some It is Battle Royale. People shouldn't be apologists for the body of work. it speaks for itself. The woman can craft and write all she wants, I won't knock that, but at the end of the day, it's still Battle Royale. Even Stephen King(who gave it a good review for the most part), called it out.

Alas, cultural thievery seems to run strong in the West at times (e.g Elgin Marbles, the Wicca movement). Itd be interesting to know if its as prevalent in others places around the world, or just a Western phenomenon. Cultural thievery does nothing to edify the people who stole it (cause it proves that they cant or dont want to create genuine culture for themselves), and it does nothing to help the victims whom it was stolen from. Everyone loses out. Its a shame.

It helps when the film was never released in the author's/filmmaker's country. It's the old tree falling where no one heard it/saw it question. If no one heard the tree fallingdid it really exist in any meaningful way? Not really IMO. As far as Collins is concerned BR never existed.
