Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Cocaine Bear

    P.Error — 3 years ago(March 08, 2023 05:32 AM)

From reading the premise, I ventured into this expecting it to be comedy-horror about a bear high on cocaine who mutilates victims in over-the-top, gruesome, ways.
    It wasn't that enough.
There is maybe one good scene of bear mutilation and that's the ambulance scene.
The tone was awkward. Imagine the tone of an Adam Sandler movie, say,
    Grown Ups 2
, and a Jonah Hill/Michael Cera/Seth Rogan comedy, except there are no jokes.
There's a bathroom fight scene that's awkward to watch; the tone of this comical, except the fight is too realistic and insufficient for the tone. When you're expecting the thrown character to hit the wall face first and knock his teeth out, they just casual fall to the floor. It's like a super-realistic bathroom fight you may get in at school except with Seth Rogan-esque dialogue that isn't funny.
The only actor who was good here was Margo Martindale as the park ranger. She was funny not because her lines her written to be funny, but because of her delivery.
Her partner is a generic David Spade lookalike. David Spade should have been in that role. He probably turned it down. They cast these no-name actors and put them in David Spade roles.
If they're going to go this route, at least go all out with the comedy. Cast the usual suspects - Kevin Hart, Charley Day, David Cross, and embrace that. But no one was funny.
Or, just make it a bloody bear movie where victims are comically mutilated throughout the runtime to keep our interest. As it stands: not enough comedy, not enough kills.
None of the characters here mattered at all. There's no character development or backstory for anyone. The villain is introduced when the villain dies. The only ones given any sort of attention are Ice Cube Jr. and his white friend. Felicity is the worst final girl in all of everything - easiest paycheck in the world, probably 4 scenes total, could have been anyone cast here, no funny lines, horrible acting, is the final girl but probably shot her scenes in a day.
I will admit there's one good joke in the beginning, dry humour, that will go over the heads of an audience for this. They give a text description of the black bear, portrayed all realistic, then says "sourced from Wikipedia." Wikipedia is unprofessional source, but very few non-academia are going to pick that up.

Felicity doesn't seem concerned that her daughter is missing, in the woods, after ingesting cocaine, with a high superhuman bear that has been mutilating people in her path.
Felicity's just casually walking along the hike, looking for her daughter, with a smile on her face, as if just another Tuesday for her.
Any mother would have been hysterical in that situation to the point of fainting.

Weird jab at Wikipedia at the end there.

          No, that's the joke.
Wiki is great, but it's common knowledge among academia that Wikipedia isn't supposed to be used as a source for any treatise, thesis, and essay. It's a user-generated rundown of information based on other sources.
Instead of "source: [peer-reviewed scientific study/organisation]" it says "source: Wikepedia." That's supposed to be the punchline that makes you laugh. It was being all quasi-serious and then hits you with that.
This joke will go over a lot of heads, though. It's like throwing in a Schrödinger's Cat joke hidden in-text that will evade most people who go to see a movie like this.

Was the bear description accurate or inaccurate?

"None of the characters here mattered at all."
I found ALL characters extremely annoying and irritating.
