I took it as he was just shining Jimmy on by blaming 'the band' and when Jimmy was talking to his mom it was easier to sum it up as that than explaining who Bobby the road manger was. And if Jimmy had been fired for something he did wrong, surely he would have made mention of it in one of his multiple phone calls while pleading for his job. I think it was purely a financial decision.
Also how Jimmy was unaware Bobby had two teenagers at home kind of showed how distant the two were- not friends but mere business associates.

Money-saving measures due to smaller venues.
Plus, it seemed that a roadie with less seniority was allowed to remain.
Possibly Jimmy, with more seniority, was too expensive and/or there was some ageism going on.
There's "its not affecting me", and then there's "its too late"
