Patrick McGoohan. Especially considering how different his two characters are.
Patrick McGoohan played 4 characters on Columbo; He appeared in "By Dawn's Early Light", "Agenda for Murder", Identity Crisis", and "Ashes to Ashes".
I always love when Patrick McGoohan shows up because you know he's going to spar with Columbo and give him what for! lol -

See there? He's such a good actor that I didn't even realize it was him half the time!
His time on Columbo spanned many years so it's hard to recognize him as he got older. His first appearance was in 1974 or 1975; his last around 1998.
His appearance changes quite a bit in those 20 plus years. -

Does anyone have any background on Culp in "Columbo Goes to College"?
First, I enjoyed his character. He was still the uppity, over confident, and smug without needing to be the murderer. His presence was commanding though his voice was shaky.
Was he left out of the finale because it would have been a logic gap? Why would the father show up at the end of class? It would have been so appropriate if he was there for one last dress down on Columbo before the final reveal. -

I'm in a local Columbo fan club. We've discussed this a lot. There is no general consensus as to why he wasn't there. It would have been great to see his face once he realized that his son did, in fact, participate in the murder. He gave Columbo such a hard time and was so pompous that it seems only fair that Columbo gets to take him down in public along with his smarmy son!
Missed opportunity. -

Is your fan club a face to face club group? Interesting! How do you find members? Or do they find you? Where do you hold the meetings and what do you do? And what food and beverage are served?
Yes, it's a face to face group. There are 15 of us but members are encouraged to bring a guest. I'd say average attendance is about 18 or so.
The club was started when the founding member posted a flyer on the bulletin boards of several local stores, shops and libraries. For the most part the meetings are held at the library (you can reserve a conference at no charge). On occasion, someone will volunteer to host at their home. I've done it a couple times.
We meet the first Saturday of each month. When the club meets at the library, we have deli, vegetable or dessert trays and beverages. We vote for what we want to eat next month and everyone chips in. We don't have dues because there is no expenses for anything but the food. Sometimes people will offer their home for the next meeting. If we meet at someone's home, it's up to the host to decide. It can be anything from coffee/tea and cake or for the more adventurous hosts, hamburgers & hot dogs, a pot of spaghetti w/garlic bread. Again, nothing fancy.
Our meetings routinely last about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. We watch an episode and discus it after. Members are encouraged to take notes because we want minimal talking while we watch.
It's a great time and we look forward to it. It's nothing fancy, just fun and as you can imagine discussion time is lively.
Edited to add members find us. Flyers are still posted at the library and a couple stores. I'd say most of the members found our flyers at the library. -

In the later Columbo episodes, I think Patrick Mcgoohan bears an uncanny resemblance to that drawing of Steinmetz from "Identity Crisis", whenever we watch those, my husband and I always call out "Steinmetz!" when he shouted up on screen

I kind of agree and disagree - in that McGoohan's performances are all his core persona (condescending & pretentious) whether a politician or an administrator. Still totally love his contribution, even as a frequent director. A friend told me Falk and McGoohan became quite close friends after the initial pairing, and McGoohan's ongoing involvement with the series (old & new) was at Falk's request.

He seems somehow pretentious to me. His episodes aren't bad but like I said, I no longer record them.
I love that Robert Culp gives Columbo the business EVERY SINGLE TIME. When he's upset; he freely shows it.
I like that McGoohan plays mind games with him.
Although not a fan of "Star Trek", I liked both episodes with William Shatner.
