I think a laid back Diana Muldaur would work well as his wife. Enough credit to her name to be recognisable but enough class to stay out of his way professionally.
Diahnne Abbott also pops to mind for the same reasons.

These are all very interesting. I keep thinking of the things he says about his wife in so many of the episodes. I try picturing some of these ladies in that role.

While she might be an expert in the bedroom, we really have to give this guy a bit of a Looker. I'm not saying Dr. Ruth is homely. She seems like a very sweet old lady. Old being the key word.

That's true. On Columbo, it was a nice gimmick. She was talked about, but never seen. Other shows like Cheers and Frasier have done that.
In the late 70s, there was a short lived show called Mrs. Columbo.
