At first I was a little meh about the trailer, then I watched it again. Wow! This wasn't just a cinema, it was in game graphics running on a PS4. It's Rockstar, so we know the story will be good and the controls will be tight. Most of us just wanted to know how good the graphics would be since it will be almost 8 years in between games. Great teaser.

I didn't think the story in RDR was all that hot, just a hodge-podge of western tropes (reformed badman goes after his ex-confederates, cynical American gets embroiled in the Mexican revolution, death of the west theme, etc. etc.) with a wish washy, not terribly assertive, lead. It was very fun to play but that's about it. No great tale to tell.
It's still too early to tell with this one but looks like they are sticking with a "death of the west" theme (check out the street lamps), set, quite possibly, a little bit earlier than its predecessor. My guess would be the gay '90s.

I thought the story in the first one was sufficient for a video game. It wasn't Bioshock but it still worked to move the game along and also allow you to veer off on side missions. As for the setting, I also noticed the street lights and signs of the end of the "old west", but wasn't the first game set in 1911?

1911 or 1909. I forget. You'd be surprised how much those rural areas looked exactly like that well into the 20's.

Well if I trust any gaming company, it's Rockstar. I'm in my 30's now and I don't play as many games as I used to, but RDR2 will be a must play for me come next year.
