Considering the fact that I have almost zero respect for what the Oscars represent, sure give this turd an Oscar. The Oscars are all about politics and pandering to the Academy to have mostly overly sentimental films recognized and applauded by people who wouldn't know pacing, story, and character development if they were slapped in the face with it.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of Oscar winning films that are absolutely fantastic. But being voted into a bloated awards show voted on by a bunch of egotistical blowhards does not make a film great.
And the "otherworldly" visual effects you speak of consists of horribly rendered CGI on par with The Green Lantern.
But, we all have our own opinions. You stated yours, and I stated mine.

Agree. I never ever understand the system of Oscar. Drama genre movies are the ones that always get full attention in every year. Never seems to catch up with them. It's so formally organised, I got so bored with it that I have to change to other channels within mere 5 minutes.
Other award shows are more entertaining and accurate based on the likeness of every category from critics and public majorly on the Internet. -
