Correct, this is why I recently suggested to Miley that she should familiarize herself with the catalog of Patti Smith, another badass lady who doesn't have a traditionally great voice, in the
American Idol
sense, but can write like nobody's business and become the sole owner of any song she chooses to cover.

agreed, altho i don't know much about Patti Smith as a singer tbh. (i only remember listening to Horses once a long time ago) i've read her book "Just Kids" tho and liked it a lot.

So I listen to a lot of music as a part of my writing process and the current project has led me to rediscover a very particular subset of the early-to-mid '70s underground scene in New York (I won't use the term punk, although it fits). Artists who were, above all else, highly cultured and able to find beauty inside of the hellish landscape of the time. Lou Reed, Television, Suicide, Jim Carroll, and, of course, Patti Smith. This one has been stuck in my head for days:
