They didnt fail. In 2016 they did NOT try to help Trump. In 2020 they did but deliberately botched it because they wanted Trump gone. They wanted to be caught because they knew that deranged people like you would happily believe the worst.

You just don't want to accept the facts that Donald Trump is a Loser and that He Lost the 2020 Election fair and square.
There was No Fraud or Rigging.
Election Officials, the Courts, the Department of Homeland Security, Trump's own Attorney General, the U.S. Supreme Court, and a majority of the Republicans in the U.S. Senate all said that the Election was Not Rigged and that there was No Fraud. -

- Russians aren't stupid. Trump demanded more investment in NATO. Trump demanded more action against subvertive communism. Trump increased sanctions against communist states.
I suspect you've never heard of Yuri Bezmenov. I recommend you check him out. Once you have, ask yourself who Russia would rather have in power.

- 'To the confusion of our enemies' - Robert Oppenheimer. it's pretty clear that the Russians saw Trump as a dividing and divisive force, a polarizing charlatan. It was in their interest to sow confusion. It's the same principle as behind their cyber attacks and misinformation campaigns in the West over the last few years (and yes, the Chinese state does that too).
NATO, that's a funny one - Obama's Administration was also pushing western allies to increase the percentage of GDP that they spent on their military. But it is true that Trump was louder about it, and probably got a bit more done there, got those countries to spend more on the military. (He also apparently and famously didn't understand how NATO worked - it's not really like a country club that you 'pay into', but no matter…).
Probably cancelled out the effectiveness for democracy however by his cozying up to every illiberal tyrant out there - he never met a strongman he didn't like.

I have no idea what books you've read, but even if they were written by Putin himself, I wouldn't trust that they were true. That's not to say they can't be true, by accident, only that we'd be foolish to think that Putin's actual thoughts on anything are published anywhere.
Did you check out Yuri Bezmenov? You'd find him interesting. Very much in line with your Oppenheimer quote.
Trump stands against identity politics. He stands against division. You see that as an insane perspective on my part, but that's because you think appeasing everyone is a virtue, you think insisting a country unites around one culture and one vision, is divisive. The facts are there, if you take off your anti-Trump glasses.
The fundamental principle of collaboration is a shared vision. People cannot be united while they are pulling in different directions. The Dems - even more so had Hillary won against her "deplorables" - are the party of division.
