Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Captain Phillips

    camerica1978 — 10 years ago(July 24, 2015 02:08 PM)

According to the rest of his crew, Captain Phillips is a fake and a liar. They said he had a rep as an arrogant, self-righteous captain. They said he refused to follow the official anti-piracy plan, because he didn't create it; and he ignored their pleas to sail farther from the coast, because he claimed to be unafraid of pirates. Also, they said he ignored repeated warnings of pirate activity, and didn't even bother to tell the crew about them. A crew member charted pirate attacks in the area, but they claim Phillips ignored that, too.
They also claim Phillips refused to cancel a fire drill during a pirate attack, and that when the pirates actually succeeded, Phillips didn't direct the crew on what to do, and left them to their own devices. The Chief Engineer was the one who took charge and led most of the crew to hide in the engine room. The Chief Engineer was also the one who disabled the ship and captured the pirate leader.
The crew also claims Phillips didn't offer to sacrifice himself to the pirates, rather the pirates reneged on a hostage exchange and just seized Phillips.
Read the story in the New York Post in October 2013.

You can also just read it here, with the fictionalized Hollywood version next to it as a comparison.

The crew were a bunch of good old american UNION workers. Doing the bare minimum and bitching about making tons of money. I didnt see any of those pussies in the lifeboat.
