Thing is, can they hold back on the more violent scenes when they have to remember that they are still only an actor who is a vessel and not the actual person they are portraying?

Alcohol can be a tricky one, probably best not to try it if it isn't a requirement to existence. For those that it is though, it's full of making mistakes and learning how to handle it
Something as deep, and potentially dark, as being in character means inhibitions are removed and that
can
be a problem for some.
I don't act and so I'm OK with it all, but I'd imagine it can't be easy to have an overriding secondary inhibition check in place while pouring your being into someone who is about to do some very bad things.
