It's a bit of long reading, but apparently none of his claims hold up:
    http://www.bdkeller.com/2011/08/who-is-sam-childers/
This is by far my favorite part. The SPLA completely debunking his involvement with their organization:
"Sam Childers is not associated with the SPLA
This is to inform all who are concerned that Sam Childers is not associated with the SPLA. Sam is alleged to be busy now collecting money in the USA using the name of the SPLA. He went to the level of alleging that he is paying his militia force a platoon of seasoned fighters recruited from the SPLA and for his effort, he says, the Government of Southern Sudan has named him an honorary commander, the only white man to achieve that distinction.
The SPLA does not know Sam Childers. SPLA cannot release its soldiers for militia purposes as that is not allowed by the SPLA Act of 2009. If the allegation is true, then the SPLA is appealing to those who are concerned to take legal measures against Sam for the misusing the name of an organization which is not associated with him.
Thanks. Signed: Lt. Gen. Kuol Deim Kuol, SPLA Spokesman"

With a past like his, it wouldn't take a genius to figure out that the guy is a sociopath with all the integrity of Jim and Tammy Faye or Robert Tilton. But did the studio and the producers care? Of course not. They're in the fantasy business, not the truth business, and they don't care who they hurt.

possibly true, or not. I think it would be in the SPLAs best interest to deny at all costs any involvement with Sam. Can you imagine what kind of trouble they could get themselves in by admitting to know or work, help this guy?
I believe the relationship he has with the SPLA would be no different than the FBI putting a undercover agent in the field saying if he is caught, they will deny he has any affiliation with him.
Sam is fighting illegally, and killing people to protect children. he is getting his arms from Russians, so no doubt he is doing a lot of illegal things in the name of "saving children" right or wrong.
Sheesh - people here are making this guy sound like he is funneling money into an offshore Swiss bank account. He does whatever necessary to get money to further his cause.
At the end of the film, and important clip of him says, " would you care how or what I did, if it meant to bring back your child or loved one who was abducted". This to me is the heaviest statement that resonated with the film. He admits he ain't no angel - don't ask.
If my child was abducted - I would rather have someone like Sam to get him back than some Police Officer behind a desk. To anyone who has children If someone abducted mine, I would have no qualms killing to bring them back.

It feels like people would do anything in order not to get involved into African hell and the reason for this article is to explain why he is such a bad guy because he did.

No, that used to be your favorite part. Now this takes its place:
Doctor Matthew H. Wilson, who has visited the orphanage in 2009, reported:
'the children were "much sicker than any we had seen" elsewhere in Sudan.[]"many [children] had pus draining out of their ears from ruptured ear drums and infections. Most had swollen bellies from malnutrition."[]'
and further reports that he had seen fungal infections on the heads of the children and said that
'The only way one gets this is if you are not bathing at all and live in filth. I saw more of this at the orphanage than in the village kids.'
The source is the well known anti-chrisitian biased publication, Christianity today:
            http://www.ctlibrary.com/ct/2011/septemberweb-only/machinegunpreacher. html
Not only does the guy not fight, he even blatantly mistreats and neglects the children in his care.

              Why am I not surprised?
