Seriously! If Super 8 never came out, I seriously doubt that Stranger Things would exist. Don't get me wrong, ST is a great TV series but it's not as great as S8. S8 had realistic teenage characters and ST tried to be realistic but they kids looked way too young and innocent and their acting wasn't as good.

Get real. JJ Abrams wouldn't have a career if it wasn't for Spielberg. Super 8 didn't have any new ideas either. When the influences are so obvious, it's all about the execution and Stranger Things did it right. Plus, Stranger Things wisely crept into John Carpenter territory, which the gutless and vision-deprived JJ Abrams never dared.

Stranger Things rips off everything else too. Super 8 is far more original.

Even if that is conceded, there are still stylistic differences in how Super 8 and Stranger Things riffed off of their obvious influences. If you prefer John Carpenter and HP Lovecraft to some of the cloying Hollywood sentimentality of ET and Super 8, then it's hard to imagine not preferring the craft of Stranger Things and how it fused in the best aspects of Spielburgian magic while stripping it of some of the worst.
