Actually, my high school boyfriend and I used to start his uncle's MG all the time by giving it a push and popping the clutch, so I'm afraid you're off base with that one, my friend.

Uh, if the starter and battery worked fine why were you pushing it and popping the clutch? Battery dead? Then it wouldn't crank? Drrr.

You don't need a starter nor a battery to "start" a standard transmission car. If needed, you can get it going by being pushed while you hold the clutch in and then "pop" the clutch while in gear and the motion of the transmission kicks the engine over, "starting" the car. Voila! Good to go until you shut it off or stall it out. Should really educate yourself before trying to talk down on anyone.

Exactly did it zillions of time with my '72 Super Beetle and '68 Beetle. Practiced just for the hell of it or to show off sometimes. Have done it with every standard I owned just to be sure it still would work if I needed it to.

Let's get this thread back to the list of absurdities, which started out so well.

That is how we drove in 50's and 60's. Very common then.

I was here for the Movie banter, but I like car stuff too. All but one of the cars I have owned over the last 30 years have had clutches and I have done hill starts with most. The most recent ones however have been high performance turbocharged ones and I have been warned off by mechanics not to do it with them unless my (mysteriously long) life depended on it.

Have done this many times in an old family Jeep CJ-7. Thing would even stall sometimes while being driven and you could pop the clutch and get it going again.
Makes me feel old that people actually don't believe this sort of thing works!

Me too. Harrison Ford would make a wonderful wooden Indian because he delivers all his dialog with little if any emotion. The only good thing about this movie is that I'll never have to watch it again. It really stunk up the joint. Just my honest opinion.

13 a policeman would be surprised if the id of a woman say she's 45, when she looks 44!

14 there is a reason why car manufacturers stopped making cars where you can sneak from the back seat to the car's trunk, the fbi demanded it

Hahaa! Waitwhat? Car manufacturers still make cars (mainly sedans) that way. Perhaps you are being sarcastic. 😜
