the movie was bearable until then, but wtf was that? So they convinced him to fly around the world to see a magic show just by flipping casino chips in his face? That makes no sense at all.
How do people not roll their eyes at this bulls**t? How are people that dumb? -

Well I think there was supposed to be a lot more involved than that - probably from Woody Harrelson's Mentalist character but we only go a quick snippet of it. He is clearly "activating" the French guy on stage, so he must have spent some time hypnotising him.
One of the main problems with this film is that by trying to be visually exciting, they were doing lots of fast paced, swiftly cut scenes, which ruined the exposition for some of the tricks. Whether this was because they were trying to make it look cool or because they couldn't come up with realistic explanations, so they didn't even bother, I'm not sure. Probably a bit of both. -

you're being kind. You can't hypnotize someone to do something that specific. That's not hypnosis, that's mind control, which doesn't exist. If it's a supernatural movie about wizards, that's fine, but that's definitely not what this movie was attempting. I just don't think they took the time to think of an explanation, so they just let the magicians be jedi.

I don't know the ins and outs of hypnosis but I would think if you can get someone to bark like a dog or play the violin or be attracted to someone, then you could implant the idea to go to Vegas.
How they got him there on thar actual day is a bit if a stretch but maybe they planned their show date around his travel.
I mean it was all a bit bollocks so it needed a lot of suspension of reality. For the purposes of the film, there was the need to believe lots of the tricks were possible, when probably they weren't. -

understand that barking like a dog or playing the violin are on one extreme end of plausibility and traveling to another country to a specific city at a specific time to do go to a specific event isn't even on the same spectrum. Two completely different things. A bit of a stretch is being kind.

Your right, there was more to 'it' and what isn't fully explained is left to the viewers imagination by explaining and showing how easy it is for Merritt to hypnotise the cheating hubby and wife in the 1st images of Merritt before he finds the tarot card!!!
Unfortunately it seems that there's heaps of unfortunate people without either imagination or brains to figure it out!!!
On the blu-ray version there's alernate endings which were better than the real ending but I suppose they ended the movie the way they did so as to make it easy for a sequel.
I really liked the movie - but each to their own - just hope they don't beep up the sequel!!! ;);) -

so just because he read their facial expressions and made some good guesses means he can make someone travel to another country to a specific city to witness a specific show on a specific day? That makes no sense

Yeah , they call themselves mentalists because they have severe mental problems , lol , they think they are Jedi , but they are actually Jed!ck .
Also , barking like a dog about las vegas and flipping casino chips are influencing ? A lot of things can go wrong :
what if he is a poor bastard and cant afford a ticket to las vegas ?
What if he has family , work , etc and cant just drop them all to go gamble in las vegas ?
What if he isnt interested in their cheap parlor trick show and go watch a strip show instead ?
What if he die before the trip to las vegas ? ..
Also , Woody Hairyson "activates" him by touching his boobs , caressing his hair and licking his ear ? What a mental g@y .
Verb
activate (third-person singular simple present activates, present participle activating, simple past and past participle activated)
To put into action, to put to work.
To turn on, to sexually arouse. -

Not all that dumb actually. Think of the basic concept of product placement for instance- you see it enough times, your friends buy it, you hear its cool, etc., So your subconscious makes the decision for you. 90% of all purchase decisions are made by your subconscious. This was less of a magic trick than a trick of the neuronsjust look at any company in the world that wants to sell you something and has undoubtedly sold you something

Im not making it up, I assure you. I do admit, to have him come to Las Vegas and see their show on that specific night is fantasy, but being influenced strategically through your subconscious to go someplace or buy something is not.

advertising is a thing, but it's not something that turns people into
helpless world traveling zombie magic devotees
. The Style Code Live banner on the top of my imdb page isn't going to make me watch that show, much less go globe trotting to see a broadcast. -

movies can exaggerate, but to different degrees. NYSM takes it to the Salvador Dali fever dream end of the spectrum even thought it so badly wants to be clever and witty. Apology accepted
edit: nice posting history lol
