Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Dual Survival

    wanton87 — 9 years ago(July 24, 2016 02:00 PM)

Saw this over at MSN recently and decided to post it here. As you go through it you will recognize some of the dont's as one's that the dual survival team members have resorted to at one time or another. I actually learned a few new things from reading through it, so it's worth checking out.It also touches on the reality of these survival shows at one point, but probably not anything that anyone here doesn't already know.

Too bad it's written in one of the most PITA ways to read an article.

Agreed. I hate it when they do that. Sometimes they give you the option to view all which is much better.
What stood out to me from the article was the warning against urine consumption (Joe), shelter building, and fire making. It seems like the guys always put a fair amount of energy into building a full shelter. In many cases this is understandable because they are in poor weather. But as the article pointed out, in fair weather the most important thing to do get yourself off the ground and in comfort.
For fire, I think that it's really tough to produce in foul weather using primitive means. I tried to make a fire one time using my ferrocerium rod. As everyone here knows, those things really put down the hot sparks. It had rained not too many days before, and the fluff that I chose was seemingly dry, but for the life of me I could not get it to ignite. Now consider trying this with a really primitive means such as friction, and it would be extremely challenging. I usually carry a ferrocerium rod, a lighter, some matches, and now I carry some trick birthday candles, and between the three my odds of success are much better.

Thank you! These lists that you can only view one at a time while tons of ads load on each page are my biggest pet peeve on the internet. Mainly because I'd actually like to see some of these lists, but I'm not clicking throw 50 pages of garbage to do it.

Get an ad blocker. 99% of the web, including IMDb, is unusable IMO without ad blocking software.

Ad blockers are great. Once in awhile I come across a website that detects it and won't let me see anything unless I add it to the allow list. But I figure if they are that anxious for me to see their banner ads, I really don't need anything off their site anyway.

The ad blocker's a good idea, but I'd still rather read lists on one page at my own pace, than have to click through 50 pages.

Many times I'll come across these types of sites while using my Android device. I found a browser at the play store called Free Adblocker that actually works pretty good. Of course you still have to click through multiple pages, but it goes a lot faster without all the ads. Hopefully all pages will be updated at some point to provide the view all option.
I recall in the early days of PDA devices that most sites filtered you through to a mobile version with no desktop option. Now pretty much all sites allow you to switch to the full version.
