The Hurt Locker shouldn't have won And while this is obviously the better film, I think the Academy has a history of realizing mistakes afterwards and not issuing another Best Picture as a "Make Up Call." Argo may not be historically accurate(Most Films Aren't) but it's still a well made film with an interesting story. I'm not saying it should've won, in fact, neither Argo nor ZDT were the BEST Film, but that usually doesn't matter. DiCaprio had a handful of performances better than his in The Revenant but that was the one to take it. Again, it's another "Make Up Call" and it's not gonna stop anytime soon. Warner Bros should've been smart in 2005 and nominated Leo for The Departed. Not only would it have been earned, it would've been a great combo with Scorsese's LONGGGG Overdue Win.
Moral of the story? The Academy is a mess. It's a tough job to do. I think of a year like 2007 with the handful of ABSOLUTE Masterpieces and can only wonder how that went down behind the scenes But then I see years like 1990 when Dancing With Wolves beat out Goodfellas and I just laugh. It's a Tricky Business, that's for damn sure. -

It's better than The Hurt Locker. But I think both films are outstanding. To me this one is re-watchable over and over, whereas Hurt Locker is a tougher one to sit through. There is something about Zero Dark Thirty's escalating intelligence sequences - some successful, some disastrous - that is incredibly compelling. Chastain is great, as is the rest of the cast. Not a single false note.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has a soft spot for
ZDT
. With all the War on Terror stuff and other b.s. aside, I'm a sucker for spy thrillers, and this is one of them, and a damn good one, too. I like how it shows the inner CIA workings over this manhunt.
And the third act raid was really good, very suspenseful. I praise Bigelow for trying to be as realistic as possible for such a raid, especially with the night-vision shots.
So if looked at as simply a movie, it's a fairly decent post-9/11 spy thriller showing the CIA workings from behind the scenes.
