The other day, I found Chapter 5 online for free on some private website, since I couldn't get it on Netflix or Hulu yet. As of a few days ago, I hadn't yet seen Chapter 4 or Chapter 5. I had not planned on viewing Chapter 4, but I (thought I) was looking forward to the arrival of Hotel (Chapter 5).
(Possible spoilers ahead)
I will say this about Chapter 5: Generally, I am not squeamish, but this Hotel chapter was just too gory for me. I'm a child of the 1980s with all the bloody horror flicks featuring Freddie, Jason, Chucky, etc. I've seen them all and I loved them. Nothing was too much for me; often my friends and I got a kick out of the predictability of those movies. Also, I'm a true-crime buff. I know more about serial killers like Bundy, Dahmer, and Gacy than a "normal" person should know. Lol. BUT.It's different to read about vicious murders - even with details provided by fabulous authors like Ann Rule - as opposed to actually viewing a sadistic scene of rape/slash/murder. I know AHS is fiction and it's all make-believe, but I really just can't get through any more of those scenes in the Hotel chapter.
In the first couple of episodes of AHS's Chapter 5, there is so much rape, murder, evil, suffering, and blood spurting everywhere. It's overdone. I can't handle it. I can't even appreciate the excellent acting job by Lady Gaga, because I can't get past the gross factor. I suffered through 2-3 episodes to give it a chance, but it truly left me feeling nauseous. Rape with a huge electric strap-on DRILL. Rape while slashing someone open and then lolling around in the blood and guts. Sick. I won't watch the rest of Chapter 5. I just can't do it.
So, I stuck with Chapter 4, which I hadn't even planned to watch. It bothered me that two of the cast members have died (in real life) since the show was filmed. I thought I'd have some difficulty watching it for that reason, (kind of like how watching "The Crow" was eerie because Jason Lee had died during its filming). Also, I feared the exploitation of disabled people for the sake of entertainment. To my surprise, one of the underlying themes of the Carnival chapter is actually ANTI-exploitation of disabled people. So, I appreciate that. It still bugs me that the people who played Meep and the Legless Woman are deceased in real life due to tragic accidents.
All in all, I am enjoying Chapter 4, however. Kathy Bates's acting is stupendous, which is to be expected whenever she graces the screen. Of course, I'm always riveted by Jessica Lange's evil characters. I am currently on the 5th or 6th episode, I think. I will definitely finish watching the season and then wait for Chapter 6 to come to Hulu or Netflix. (I don't have cable or satellite with FX, so I have to wait for each season).
I'm sure I'm one of a rare few people that couldn't deal with Chapter 5. I know some people who loved it. Others thought Lady Gaga's acting was award-worthy. I guess I'm just a big baby. I just don't enjoy gory, sadistic rape scenes. It's unnerving. So I will not go back to Chapter 5. I just wanted to post a warning out there. I know that gore is expected with AHS, and I've seen every other season. But, I personally can't get past the scenes of rape/torture/murder/blood-drinking that were ever-present in the first couple of episodes of the Hotel chapter. -

I found Season 6 on FX! I was thrilled to see that my subscription to the Playstation Vue gave me some free channels for a couple of months (including FX). I just binged episodes 1-4 tonight, so I am caught up. I thought I'd have to wait 6 months to a year in order to see season 6 on Hulu or Netflix.
It's interesting that you mention the pig thing. It bothers me, too. I love pigs, actually, and I'm aware that to most people, that would seem bizarre. However, pigs are actually brilliant and loyal creatures and not dirty, dumb animals As they're depicted in the media. I don't eat pigs (or any meat), so I'm not just preaching on a soapbox talking the talk but not walking the walk. Pigs, are, in my opinion, beautiful animals. The medieval torture scenes are a little tough to watch, and when they introduced the pig carcasses, I did turn away. I do feel that the dead pigs and pig carcass "costumes" are unnecessary and overdone.
All in all, I somewhat enjoyed those first 4 episodes of Season 6. There are things that are so unrealistic, though. I don't mean the obvious things, like spirits, a creepy wood-dwelling sex-demon, and ghosts capturing a live child. Lol. I was annoyed that they tried to portray the house as being built in the late 1700s. That house is definitely from the late 19th century to early 20th century. It's a Victorian with a brilliant spiral staircase. In the 1700s, nobody built such grandiose dwellings with crown moulding and high ceilings.
Nevertheless, I'm happy to see Kathy Bates again. I hate her character, as the audience is supposed to, but her acting is so amazing. She is believable in every role she plays. I LOVED her as The Bearded Lady. She was my favorite character in that season.
Sometimes, I feel like Sarah Paulson is being forced down my throat with this show. I don't hate her, but she is ubiquitous and plays a blah or unlikable character in almost every season. Generally, I I would never feel much sympathy if her characters were killed off. Lol.
I'm disappointed the some of my favorite actors or characters have been killed off already in Season 6. I adore Dennis O'hare. He is a brilliant and versatile actor and I love seeing him in every season of AHS. I didn't know the guy who portrayed "Cricket", but the character was so intriguing. He brought some humor and flamboyance to the darkness of the scenes.
This is not my favorite AHS season for sure. I find myself tuning out sometimes and doing chores instead of paying close attention to the show. I was glued to the TV during Season 5, though.
Besides the gross pig stuff, what do you think of Season 6?
