This has been a far more interesting discussion than I expected.
There is a huge discussion of Druids on Wikipedia. Apparently at one point highly respected. I don't think they were gypsies who come originally form Romania and usually don't get much respect.
The article said that they were accused of practicing human sacrifice, which fits the story line. So maybe more to this aspect of the story than I suspected.
