To make as much money as possible. The same point to every movie, really.

Yeah, that's about what I got. I liked Ayers 'Training Day' but this was not for me, acting decent, but gimmicky, boring, So everyone is filming themselves, commiting felonies? Really? I'll give it another chance someday, I bought the freakin' Blu-Ray. Waste.

^ 'Training Day' was by Antoine Fuqua, not Ayers.
I thought the rapport in the car between Gyllenhaal and Pena was always superb. Possibly partially improvised? Or perhaps it was just directed in a good way, really authentic vibe.
I have to agree a bit with the opI really have no idea what this movie set out to do. Afterwards, I didn't really feel one way or the other, nor did I really develop a deep enough attachment to the main characters to care about their inevitable demise. The storyline was hardly mindblowing.
I think a lot of has to do with the fact that Pena has played this same kind of guy over and over. 'World Trade Center' and even 'Crash' come to mind.

Ayer is the writer on both films.

            There was
            a lot
of improvisation in this film, according to Michael Pena on the dvd extras.. Jake might have mentioned it too but Michael definitely did.
Wait you didn't have an attachment to the characters enough to care about their demise? Hech I damn sure did is all.. and besides, the way I see it the fact that they are good, honest cops in the Southland, or anywhere at all for that matter, means that really, we should care about their demise by default.. gotta' respect these guys the way I see it and so we should damn sure care that he died.

That's just an ignorant thing to say. Yes when they make movies they plan to make money, but the point of making a movie is to tell a story.

Just because you're too stupid to understand it, doesn't mean it's a plot hole

You don't think cops talk to each other about anything while they're on-duty? You don't think they give each other sh*t or argue about things? You don't think there's more to their jobs than just being a dick and pulling people over?
It may be a movie portrayal of cops, but they went for unparalleled authenticity, and succeeded.

I think what some people are forgetting is that this particular department is set in one of the most violent districts in the whole of the USA. So do you put fat, donut-eating cops there, or fit, alert and capable cops who are up to the task?
I thought this was a really good movie with excellent performances, a lot of tension and excitement and an emotional pull that was very well instilled without being too contrived.
                                      What's the point..?
The 'point' in a movie should always be open to interpretation but, for me, the next time I read a newspaper report or hear on the TV that a police officer was gunned down or stabbed or whatever and lost his/her life and perhaps had a young child/children etc. (it's not unusual is it?) I'll probably be reminded of this excellent drama and appreciate the sacrifice made by so many of these extraordinary individuals. It's based on two real-life officers after all.
