Except that any man would have fallen for her enthusiasm, intelligence, gentleness, warmth, and beauty. Yes, he did want to mentor her, but he was didactic by nature. That was part of the attraction.

            Well stated, "shelemm"!!
I have absolutely no way of knowing, but I'm guessing the OP is female (and having said that, will probably be proven immediately wrong!), and if I'm right, can totally understand how a woman can't fully appreciate just how impressive the refusal of
            Josh Radnor
            's
character is to the VERY direct 'offer' of the sexy, willing, virginal co-ed played by
            Elizabeth Olsen
            .
The fact that he's nearly twice her age has absolutely no bearing on his "swooning" over this smart, personable, and beautiful woman..almost ANY healthy heterosexual male, whether he's 35, 15, or 75, would probably fall for a lovely woman like this who makes it abundantly clear she wants him. Why? Simple biology..just as women are born with certain drives that start shifting into high gear the moment they reach puberty, so too are men, and whether we like it or not, that's just how it is.
So the idea that a (relatively) young male becomes aroused to the affections of an attractive young woman does NOT, send a "BAD message"no, all it does is to send the message that all systems are functioning exactly as they should in these two sexually available beings, for the potential of the biological imperative to be consummated, i.e., procreation of the species.
In fact, the idea that his physiological response to this woman is somehow "pathetic", couldn't be any further from the truth.especially given the fact that in the end, he acts in HER best interests, and elects to NOT take advantage of a situation he could so EASILY have.
No, I would take the exact opposite argument you make, and say that "Jessie Fisher's" ultimate reaction to "Zibby" is actually somewhat HEROIC, given the signs we see that his body is screaming out to him NOT to pass up a chance like this one.
But then, these are just the feelings (and ramblings) of THIS 54 year old malemake of it, what you will.

It's called testosterone. Get those injections and a woman will start behaving the same.

Women behave the same anyway, it's just for many reasons our society thinks otherwise (not least because for millennia in most societies women were punished for acting this way, or risked pregnancy, or both, and for men it was called "sowing your oats."

                  another
54-year-old male: Kind of pathetic that someone would think it's terribly wrong for two adults to be attracted to each other when they're a whole (gasp!) 16 years apart in age.
Seems like someone had too much time on their hands after the movie and wanted to indulge either their genuine puritanism or an impulsive desire to troll.

My problem was that she looked a lot closer to his age than 19 and when I checked she was actually 23 at the time of filming but she just seemed a lot older than what she was supposed to be portraying. So this "swooning" didn't seem real.

agree, 35 should naturally be looking at 16; a bad message for 18-year-olds whose potential is slipping away

The funny thing is I left this movie with a totally different feeling, based on the fact, that
although Nat wasn't real, Jesse wasn't shown taking any drugs
                          .
So I started to think, as it's neither clearly stated nor denied,
perhaps Dean had a total psychotic breakdown when he was in college. If Jesse is Dean, the one Zibby wanted to sleep with was Dean, but he rejected her, feeling her to be too young, and Jesse's age was the justification
. Perhaps I was the only one who found it mightily strange that the Romance professor talked to Jesse
as if he was Dean's age, and with a full life ahead of him. Why would anyone in their 50s or 60s give such a life advice to a 35-year old man? Unless it was Dean who went to bed with her years ago
. When Jesse's ex told him it wasn't her job to look after him anymore
I was fully expecting a reveal that his laundry wasn't stolen, but taken by an orderly, and the book store clerk is the librarian of the mental hospital, where Dean still resides after his infamous breakdown, making his ex actually a nurse, who quit, and his mind translated it as a relationship
                          .
A lot of the interactions made sense instead of just dangling away, or maybe I was just still under the impression of Reaser's role in Hello my name is Doris.
I live in the Gordius Apartment Complex, my interior designer was M.C. Escher.
