    spoilers
and all of a sudden he sleeps with his old teacher and ends up with that chick from the book store? It felt like a different film all of a sudden.
btw, the whole scene where he just can't take olsen's virginity was ridiculous, seems to me that every guy would literally jump at the opportunity.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Everything you've said here shows that you have no comprehension of this film. It was about age, growing up, and being comfortable about where you're at. It was not about the relationship between Jesse and Zibby, but instead about how their meeting brought them to a new place in their lives.
And no, I know if I were 35 I would not take the virginity of a 19 year old. Once you grow up you will understand that taking someone's virginity is not a prize. Your whole post shows that you have quite a bit of growing up to do.

Somebody has to take her virginity, why not a nice respectable man where the entire relationship is very sweet and romantic? It's not like the guy is 50+ years old or on the flipside a 22 year old dude who smells of beer and rushes through it.
Just saying, it's not so black and white awful like you make it out to be. I'm 32 and don't crusade to "take" virginity but if the situation is appropriate it just is. I won't feel disgusting in the morning if the feelings are genuine.

Yeah, I'm 35 and wouldn't think it was out of the question. But the first poster was a douche.

This. Instead Olsen's character goes straight to a party, downs a pint and tries to bang some douche bag. She probably does. Which would have been the better scenario? I often think: "if I was her father how would I feel" and in this instance, I would much prefer that she have meaningful intercourse with a sensitive guy who respects her, rather than with some chump who is after a quick lay with any girl he can get his hands on.
"oh mummy, oh daddy - lets all play Kabadi!"

The film gives major clues, short of a safe falling on your head, that the guy is reticent about the difference in age and mentality. Once she drops the 'bomb' on him, he panics.

Yeah I agree actually. Maybe it's because romcoms are as common as grass nowadays and they always end the same way, but I was expecting them to get together in the end. Plus, they were delightful together! It felt like a punch in the stomach.
I get what the filmmakers were trying to do and I have respect for them and this film, but I felt kind of manipulated. It really felt like a cutesy little romance at first and then it became some metadrama. I thought it would definitely end with them getting together after realizing age is just a number and love is real or something, but then Radner decided he wanted to make it about life and stuff. Maybe I'm biased because my parents happen to be 12 years apart and have been happily married for 30 years, but still.
I appreciate what the film was trying to do but I found that it was unable to maintain consistency and didn't feel good in the end. It felt manipulative. I think a recut is necessary.
A good film to compare it to in this regard is 500 Days of Summer which ends similarly but it's a feel good ending.
