They should have gotten Brett Cullen from Joker to reprise his role as Thomas Wayne for the news footage scene.
Especially since they're both "crooked" Thomas Waynes. The Joker's Thomas Wayne would have tied in beautifully here.
And the news report said the Waynes' murders
are still unsolved.
and Alfred later says it may
have been committed by a random thug
which also ties to Joker, as that man was wearing a mask.
It's a masterpiece overall. Pattinson is the best live-action Batman to date. Boy, does that jawline work in the cowl.
I love the B-movie aspect to it even though it's low-budget for a Batman film really shows. There are almost no high-scale action scenes. The biggest action scene was the Penguin chase which is small in scale compared to what Nolan has done: the bus bank robbery, the Tumbler chase, the plane hijacking.
Jeffrey Wright made a point good about Gordon. Batman was created in 1939 with Gotham based off New York, which at the time, was 95% white. So if you set Batman in present-day, and update the gadgets, update the suit, but not update the race of the supporting characters, then something's off. That said, he's a perfect Gordon, second or equal to Gary Oldman.
Zoe Kravitz is perfect as Catwoman as she looks exactly like the brunette Selina Kyle from the comics, with skin to match. I guess you could say Selena Kyle was always ambiguously-raced in the comics, and considering two black actresses have played her in live-action, her being light-skinned black woman seems like a no-brainer.
One gripe though: The "Joker"
scene should have been deleted scene. I also thought that performance of Joker was pretty bad, but again, the bar has been set so high with Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix, that this performance of Joker seemed like it belonged in a CW show or fan-made short film.

I'm not really a fan of dc stuff or even batman in particular, but I did enjoy this movie a great deal more than their typical offerings. It felt a lot more grounded in the real world with a Year One vibe. Catwoman seemed true to that Year One vibe, looking like the dirty ghetto half-breed prostitute she was portrayed as in that. I don't know if she was ever identified to be half black or whatever (who cares) but she was definitely not all white, so this version matches up nicely.
Gordon has always been a terrible character, he's just not interesting, very bland and generic. I'm not a fan of changing characters race/sex just for the **** of it, but casting this guy didn't bother me at all. He looks like Gordon, just darker skinned. I guess he's so uninteresting I just didn't care. I'm thankful they left out the usual suspects and didn't try to force Harvey Dent in just for the sake of having him there. Another bland and uninteresting character.
Other than a few gadgets like cell phones, this movie felt like it could have been set in any era, from the 50's on up. They could have easily tied this in to the Joker movie with a little work, but I guess they are keeping that separate. I did hear the other day they are going to release a Joker 2, now that's a movie I am actually looking forward to.

Year One is my favourite comic of Batman. And this movie, I consider it a blend of Nolan's realism, Burton's art deco gothic city, and Year One. It is the perfect Batman movie: a detective noir.
I like how Gordon has been involved in the narrative, as an important character, since the Nolan movies. Gordon has essentially become the new Robin: Batman's sidekick.
In the Burton/Schumacher movies, Gordon was given nothing to do. He was just there. He has since become a major character in the narrative. Alfred too, has gone from frail Butler to former military helping Batman out on his missions. Who needs Robin when Alfred and Gordon make perfect sidekicks? Batman has so much depth.
Carmine Falcone being biologically Selena's father is believable too as Maria Kyle was likely black. It wasn't mentioned and there's no reason to.
Both the commissioner and district attorney
were killed here
obviously paving the way for Gordon and Dent to infiltrate.
