The opening chapter of the book concern's Shadow's release from prison and his initial encounter with Wednesday, but I can't for the life of me remember what he was in prison

Well I'm sure Ranguvar could answer more fully but Shadow was involved in some kind of robbery - I think he was the driver of the getaway car. Laura was involved somehow too but Shadow took the rap to stop her going to prison. Happy to be corrected if I've got it wrong.

He was in prison for assaulting the two criminals which didn't give him his cut for being a getaway driver in a robbery.
