Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Starlet

    From their Facebook page:
"If you watched STARLET on Netflix streaming before this morning guess what? You watched an edited/censored version. The correct version is streaming now. See the film how it was intended to be seen."
    That is all.

Is that why the subtitles were out of sync after that one scene?

Yeah, I found the straight porn to be rather distracting and detracting from what were a few intriguing performances. If the "correct" version is supposed enhance the overall story, I'd say it's nothing more than gratuitousthough dudes will probably enjoy it.

I think it totally added something. You see porn mostly from outside, watching the product, which is most often totally artificial. Or you see someone just as a normal person, and wonder how he/she could do porn for a living. And that scene brought these two realities together.
I literally thought "wow why would the actress do that?". Of course she seemed totally fine with it, and I have nothing against porn. But Sadie did say her sex life is complicated because of her job. And I guess the portrayal of the "professionalism" and clinical approach to the sex scene is rather realistic. Making porn is still a pretty weird thing to do, even though so many young girls seem to do it.
Didn't any of this resonate? Seeing a character you care about suddenly in this weird sex situation. If it had been sex with her boyfriend it wouldn't have added anything, but because she is a porn actress, it does.

Not sure I follow - there was far more penis in the porn scene than breasts and vagina combined.

exactly, for some strange reason right after I found out she was a porn performer I got a lot less involved, invested, and interested in the plot of this movie and this movie. I dont' know if that was because right after that the movie got worse and less interesting or because my appreciation and respect and love for her character was lessened because she turned out being just a useless, common slut, so it was my perception of her character that was changed dramatically or both.

hah I just finished the unedited version it seems, and I thought that scene could have used editing. Not because it like made me uncomfortable or anything, I just don't think it really added anything. The movie wasn't at all about her being in porn, so the explicit detail just seemed kind of like a non sequitur.
I would have liked it much better if it just lead directly up to it, shown the start when she takes her top off with her back to the camera, then move to the guy taking the phone call down the hall, and end scene, or have a few minute of off camera sex noise.
Her porn job would have been made explicit in order to establish her visit to the convention so the Sadie character could have her conflict moment, and the audience would have gotten the opportunity to use their imagination.
                But that's just me.

I agree, too. I didn't mind the porn scene, but I thought showing all the detail was going to have a direct relation to events that followed, but it didn't. The title of the movie made me suspect she was in porn and then dramatic scene with the roommate losing her job confirmed it, so if the point was only to establish that she was a porn actress, it was way overkill. What you described would've spelled it out just fine for anyone who missed the other hints.
One thing I did like about the scene was that it focused on male nudity and we see practicaly none of the main actress' body. Having women topless in movies is an easy way to please the male gaze and to have nudity without earning a harsh rating. It's lazy and dare I say sexist. Glad this film at least didn't go that hackneyed route.
