I can see how this film might attract negativity, it features some graphic sex scenes, but I think the director was trying to emphasise an important point during those scenes. If you think about it, he was showing the sex as a job, taking away the intimacy by allowing us to see the camera crew, the boss distracted on his mobile phone etc etc. It was showing something erotic, and taking all of the eroticism out of it.
Here's my quick, spoiler-free review of Starlet.

dont read to deep into things like this its trash the director is a pretentious low life that's why he put those sex scenes in there .He knew the fart brained hippie chicks hemmingway and maeve were easy targets and would be easily swayed to look past this and be convinced that it was artistic merit when in actuality the director had ambitions of directing porn this film deserves negative 0 -10 just for that its smut gutter trash disguised as a artful movie .i fuqin am getting fed up with waste of sperms like the film maker.the porn scenes didnt have to be in this film the film was alright with out them we got it that her character worked in the film industry and this fuqing degenerate tree hugging liberal fuqing retard goes and sticks smut like this in his film .He brow beats the hell out of his audience because they are for the most part no smarter than he is . then dimwits like yourself will justify his actions making him appear relevant its all a trick .Its the devil you dont know id follow a studio film anyday at least they dont hide behind their shallow tactics like numb nutts like this .Its so freakin insulting because there are people out there who are 100 times more talented than this dillweed yet this guy gets attention for his work when he deserves his head to be sucken in with a blunt object ;this is the real reason why films are lousey in todays age

You called
me
a "dimwit". I'd re-read your own post before you start slinging that kind of mud around.
Look, I don't want to get into a pointless debate with you here. You've already proved yourself to be entirely unreasonable, small-minded and insulting. That's fine, it doesn't hurt me one bit, or more importantly, Sean Baker himself. I can understand some reaction to the sex scenes. They are graphic. But Dree Hemmingway only took part partially in those scenes. A body double performed most of the really shocking cuts. I stand by what I said in my original post. Baker was trying to juxtapose two worlds. He was giving us another side to Dree's character. It's a challenge to see her like this. We care about her at this stage of the film. I thought of her like a cute, younger sister that I wanted to look after. Then, we see her in this awful situation, doing porn for a living. It's kinf od heartbreaking. You want more for her. It's not erotic at all to me.
So, yes, I disagree with everything in your reply. Wholeheartedly. -

Actually the excess graphic sex scenes were quite pointless. We already get the picture that she's a porn star. Boogie Nights and many other movies can convey that without having to show genitalia or copulation. The sight of two people getting undressed with a camera and lighting crew standing there is more than enough of a hint. Here you just have some self-indulgent scenes added by the director.
Personally I knew what they did from the beginning and when I saw her with male actor Manuel Fererra, I knew it was supposed to represent a big budget porn production -

the problem I had with the sex scene with the main character was not that it was not erotic, the problem I had with it was that it was so not graphic. my gosh, this movie is about a porn performer. and even in this age of porn where we've seen sex in an explicit way this scene is so tame and fake looking that it's stupid and is a failure not just compared to porn sex but compared to movie sex scenes as far as realism is concerned. I've almost never seen such laughably bad, fake, camera angles, (so where you see nothing, not even nudity,) posturing, and camera recording.
