It drives me crazy how bad most of the people are at playing this game. I give the celebrities some slack but the contestants are just awful.
I have the feeling these people go to the audition for the show not knowing what type of game they are auditioning for. Their lack of pop culture and general knowledge trivia is definitely not to the level it should be for someone on that show.
I would KILL on that show. I'm great with celebrity names.

Then how did they make it past the auditions? If they bomb on the show, they had to have bombed during auditions too.

My husband used to run a film production facility where a famous game show was shot. Sometimes I would watch the auditions or the show's filming and I learned that morons are fine contestants, generally preferable to smart (read: dignified people) because they jump up and down and squeal and make fools of themselves so willingly. Also, if the questions are too hard they make sad-puppy faces for a second, then brighten, clap, and guess. They just make better television and if they don't the director reshoots the scene.
Additionally, since these shows aren't aimed at regular viewers of, say, Charlie Rose or NOVA, the contestants appeal to the viewing public.
I think it says a lot about what we consider "entertainment" now.

I couldn't care less if someone doesn't know a certain celebrity but when they don't know historical figures and what they were famous for, that is quite sad. The other day they're were two people on the show that didn't know Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. Craig was the clue giver and was shocked when the both of them didn't know. One would have been bad enough but both of'em was in fact quite shocking. I find it rather amusing that a guy from England knows more about American history than the people on this show.

Oops, Scotland Don't let Craig catch you calling him English. LOL!
It is a bit shocking when Craig has to give a clue like Blabraham Inkum before they can guess one of our most famous presidents, but I tend to cut the contestants some slack for being in a stressful situation. (Plus, I think some of them just have actual brain-freeze. They keep it so cold in the studio, you can see the lady contestants' outright shivering and/or their hair and blouses blowing in the breeze.)

The one that gets me is when the name is Benjamin Franklin, and the contestant always says, "He's the president on the $100 bill". Benjamin Franklin was never President. But the most infamous case had to have been when the name was Craig Ferguson. The clue giver pointed to the host and said, "He's that guy there". The person was stumped.
But throughout it all, my motto was "Dignity! Always dignity!".

I liked when the name was Rip Van Winkle and the clue giver's clue was "He's a serial killer."

In the bonus round on today's first episode, the only remaining name was "Bed, Bath & Beyond." AS USUAL with the morons on this show, the contestant gave every ridiculous clue you can think ofbut DIDN'T do the OBVIOUS: "the thing you sleep on at night" "Bed." "Not a shower but a" "Bath." By this time the celebrities should've gotten it, since things like "it's a store" had already been said: "Bed, Bath & Beyond." Instead, the idiot kept going with "it's an alliterationblank blank blankblank blank blank"
Andon the second episode, one of the names was "Michigan." So what does Einstein do? Why, he says: "it's a statethey have five lakesa stateit's northit's a statethey have five lakes" What DOESN'T he say? "Detroit?" "Michigan!"

I can understand that one especially as they did really well on everything else. He panicked. If you cannot find a way to get the store without using the words its a good strategy to do the words one at a time. They would have gotten it after: Sleep On ____ & _____ Tub.
                          Some players are totally clueless.
The ones that really annoy me are people that say:
"Oh she's a really great actress, I love her, she's been in a lot of amazing movies" as though that should mean anything to anybody and hasn't just wasted 7 seconds to providing zero information.

Yep! Good grief, they're great at "he's an actor! a famous actor!" Umgeelet me flip through the ZILLIONS of famous actors there have been since the inception of actingand maybe in a year or two I'll pick the correct ONE.

How about "famous colors"? For blueor greenor purpleetc., they could give the clue, "it's a famous color!"

I have noticed that, so far this season, the contestants seem to actually know pop culture. They might not be good at giving clues, but they have been getting more answers right. I think that's due to the first season, no one really knew about the show, so they were just getting anyone to be on. This season, they've actually had people apply and want to be on the show.
And, I do like the new changes. As well, Craig seems to have become more of himself this season. Yeah, he's been pretty risque (as some others have commented), but that's what I expect from him.

They do seem to be better, I only remember Craig breaking his "rhyming" rule once. And when Weird Al was the clue giver the contestants got nine right in the first round, the highest total I've seen in that round, though I have seen nine and ten for the first 45 seconds of the final round.

Yea and Craig made it look like the guy had gotten none when his partner came out.
Once with Richard Dawson on Family Feud someone got over 200 in the first round so Richard, on top of his game, asked the second contestant a bunch of crazy questions nobody could possibly answer before letting him know they had already won anyways.
