It's a pretty old movie by now. Not everybody today has seen it or know about it.
It's highly overrated in my opinion.

First time I watched it, I thought the same thing. I found it boring, and overrated. I kept seeing it high on #1 lists, and couldn't figure out why. Then I read the book and it made the movie incredible.

Only a complete moron would confuse "not have seen" with "never heard of".

I also think The Godfather is overrated - it is not a bad film but I don't think it deserves the praise it has been given. This film, The Good Neighbor, was better than I expected. But the two films are not comparable. Caan is a great actor and, to a point, doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

The big thing that makes "The Godfather" so great is the fact that it doesn't try to do too much story-wise. It was an exercise in restraint and it allows the viewer to get to know the characters.
