That is not the case at all. I'm a bit too generous to films like this. I knew what the story entailed and was intrigued by it despite the horrid reviews. I went into the film with an open mind. Not to mention it's setting and cast was enough check it out. And now I have my reasons as to why it didn't fully register with me. Performances were great, but the overall story line which started out to be very promising instead ended on an insubstantial note.

Lot of tensity to culminate in a bland ending, that's the misguidance. Could have been a less thrilling crime drama instead if there wasn't much of a reveal.

Strangerland's imagination lead it to being generic in the end. A woman's heredity got her daughter killed or raped or both. That's pretty much it. It was an average film at best. Notice how I didn't say it was bad.

Hey if that's how you feel about it that's totally fine. I too enjoyed the performances, possibly more than you did, but the overall movie didn't register. There were aspects I did appreciate but overall thought the ending was a bit too simplistic for all the film's drama and mystique. It's made out to be something bigger than what the ending implied, that's where I thought it was misguided.

Aye, shock value. Just more emphasis on the mother's nymphomaniacal tendencies, and that's it. Though her husband and Weaving's detective arriving to her aid was touching. Whole town seems like it's against them, so they're forced to rely on each other as well as figuring out where the daughter went, to no avail. They never really find out what happens to her, she could have walked out into the middle of the outback and be swept away by another sandstorm. Overly simplistic, what's the point in all of it?

At times I did use my imagination in thinking maybe it wasn't anything at all that took the daughter. It's a movie, so you can never always tell what's real when matters become overly shady or intricately written. Maybe the land itself swallowed (figuratively) her whole like anyone else who would venture out with no support. So yes, I do use my imagination.
