If they didn't want to be chow, they should've done what intelligent people do when trying to affect change in places thousands of miles away: write to people in positions of power who can sway Big Money into doing something different besides what they're doing at the moment.
People who are in positions of power got there
BECAUSE
of Big Money.
If someone climbs into a lions cage at the zoo and get's eaten is it fair to shoot the lion dead?
Fair? No. Will it be done? Yes. Nature isn't fair for humans OR animals.
To answer the question of "Why does Justine lie?", I believe it's been discussed that the whole scene was a dream sequence. We don't know if that conversation even took place. -

Like most right-wingers, he could count his living brain cells on the fingers of one hand - if he could count.
There are 8.2 billion people in the world. 8.19 billion of them have never heard of and don't give a fuck about Charlie Kirk. Get over it. -

Cannibalism isn't only happening in the Amazonian jungle..
Ever heard of Jeffrey Dahmer?
And he wasn't the only one.
Cannibalism happens world-width, from America to Germany, from Korea to the Dominican Republic..

But people slaughtering animals to eat them is okay?
Humans are nothing more than evolved animals.
In fact humans are worse than animals, humans kill animals to get money out of it while animals only kill for food.
I for one would support it if cannibalism would get legalized.

So, you would support humans eating other humans, heh?
If I could, I would drop you right down in an Amazon jungle where some tribes it is said still do this……and we would see your tune change very quickly…and I would leave your butt there, too. Humans are worse than animals?…man, Ibet you dont have a girlfriend or many friends with that attitude.
What a piece of work you are!….and may some cannible fry your brain in their plant oils and serve over rice. A curse as of now is upon you…..in a few days you will be looking over your shoulder……a long dead cannible will rise and come for you and there is no where on earth you can hide from it. The Mark is now upon you…at first you will think it is a small rash and when you see this you cannot stop it. Your clock starts now…..yet it will not come for you right away….you will begin to notice strange happenings around you after 4 mos from now aand when this starts you will remember this writing and seek help. Nothing can help you….nothing can stop what is to be. -

For my understanding, I think she lied because it's her way to protect the jungle that they were trying to protect in the first place. Remember those parts when her other companions kept telling her about the benefits they could reap of their activity. Like for e.g., the black guy where he let her show the jungle during their plane ride or their schmuck leader stating that he did what he did (where he made a deal with another logging company) in order to be able to implement his plans or as he sees it in a bigger picture. Basically, since all the media were tuning in to her story now, it would be a waste of the opportunity and the death of her companions would be for nothing.

She did it to preserve the rain forest. If she says the natives killed them all then they would continue with cutting down the rain forest but she says the natives were good to her so it makes people think twice about cutting down the Amazon.

I'm sure saving some trees will make it up to the other people the cannibals eat, torture, and slaughter

I posted this comment on another thread, but here it is for you:
That's the culture of the village. They aren't evil per se. That's the only thing they've ever known. They're a product of their environment. The villagers killed the activists b/c they felt threatened by them thinking they were part of the corporation that was bulldozing their environment and trying to kill them. Remember the scene at the beginning w/ the teacher explaining female circumcision and the teacher explains that's a part of another culture and that it's seen as acceptable there. Same logic.
The main character couldn't forgive that guy and left him, because he simply exploited the villagers to gain fame. He knew that they would get killed and that they would lose their homes, but choose to do so, so that he could get more popular and his organization would as well in the process.
Remember the guy's girlfriend asks the main character if she's doing this for the right reasons and she responds yes. The boyfriend (or the guy left in the cage) wasn't. On top of that, he consciously offered up one of the fellow members as a sacrifice to the tribe.
Justine lied to protect them and what was happening to them. -

Oh good. I was worried Nazis were evil, but now you've assured me since that's their culture I should respect it and they aren't evil.
Anyways, seeing as the natives didn't mutilate and eat each other, it's pretty safe to say that they actually do know killing people is frowned upon. This isn't that complex of an issue
