I was disappointed that the film wasn't set in Africa or the Muslim world where FGM is commonplace. Los Indios & Latin Americans in general don't do FGM.
But FGM is more commonplace in Christian countries in Africa than "Muslim" countries -

lol I love that defense. The implication being: it happened in Christian countries so Christians likely allow it to happen or perform FGM. As you said, it is still Muslims doing it. A woman was decapitated in Oklahoma a while back. Does that mean the U.S. allows or performs decapitations on women? No, because it was a Muslim who did it.

You're being sarcastic right?
The moment the Professor talked about FGM in class you honestly didn't know that wasn't going to come back?
IMO, that was horribly bad screenwriting/foreshadowing.
I also have a problem with the scene in the village. Not b/c it was scary or gross, but b/c it made NO sense & done just to provide "shock".
Think about it, we're told by the professor that FGM in South American tribes is considered a "right of passage" from girl to womanhood.
Why would the villagers show that respect to this girl?
She's either just food (as they put her & her friends in the same pen they kept the pigs), or she's their enemy. So why would they circumcise their food? Or show the same respect to their enemy that they do their own kind?
I think the main problem, IMO, with the film was that Roth DIDN'T understand the natives. He couldn't decide if he wanted them to be the victims or the crazy savages.
I was very much looking forward to this film. I was disappointed. -

No, the scene where shes "inspecting" the girls, the mutilation is a right of womanhood, the first 2 were not virgins, she was. whioch is why they were going to do it to her. the other 2 were already "women"

Props to Roth then, whatever one's feelings on Inferno are; rare is the horror film gutsy enough to invert the much hackneyed "virgin home free; every other gal dies" trope -

You know what IS bad writing? The fact that all this didn't factor in at the ending. Think about it, FGM was her main concern at the beginning, and here was the opportunity to use the media to bring attention to it. All she had to do is tell the truth. Rather she lied to further some other agenda. Disappointing.

Well uh no..I knew at the point when she was penetrated what was to come but I didn't research so deep into this movie prior to viewing to know that was to come. And having done FGM myself in class as a presentation its not usually something that specific part of the world practices..as the other poster pointed out had it been in Africa or something yea I'd think not only are they about to be lunch but she's getting mutilated as well.

Not really, I can't come up with a movie quickly buy the TV series "Sopranos" was noted for introducing story lines that went no where and left the viewer hanging. One of the worst one was the Russian special forces guy that they took in the woods to shoot.
