This is the only movie that I know of which uses Linguistics as its underlying science. I loved it.

I think I was benefited from the fact that I didn't know about this movie until I watched it, so I guess my opinion wasn't affected by any hype or disappointment.

Same here. I just heard it was good, but I knew nothing about the plot other than aliens arriving.
I was blown away by the experience of watching two species learning
how
to even begin communicating.
So many stories, so little time. -

I think the decision to make the aliens as abstract as possible (black/white, simple shapes) was a mistake, because it made the experience itself a bit anemic. Linguistics and metaphor are cerebral enough; I think it also needed something to engage the heart and the eye.

Gotta disagree. The design of the aliens sold it more to me. After all, why would a species that doesn't comprehend time as we do look anything less than abstract?
Plus, my eyes were fully engaged trying to make out exactly what they looked like.

Thank you. You just proved yet another fan of Arrival really doesn't understand it at all.
I mean, any movie I like I can at least defend it, warts and all.
But not fans of Arrival.
They say 'You just don't understand it' and that's the end of it.
I would be the same way if I had to defend this film. It's that bad. -

I don't get it. It makes no sense at all. That's the problem.
On top of that, there is no chemistry at all within the movie between characters. None.
And we are supposed to believe that Adams and Renner are going to fall in love and have a baby?
I do enjoy seeing fans of the movie incapable of explaining it, though. -

I don't get it. It makes no sense at all.
I know. That's what I said.
I would happily explain it to you, but we both know you're not about to accept the explanation and I'll just be wasting my time.
I'm sure if you were actually, genuinely pursuing the truth, you'd conduct a Google search, where I'm sure plenty of critics and analysts have already provided the answers you're looking for.
If you want my advice (I'm sure you don't, but I'll provide it anyway), try injecting a little humility into your personality and you'll find life becomes much more rewarding. No man knows everything. It's OK not to understand something. However, don't make the foolish, hubristic mistake of thinking that because you don't understand it, it's nonsense.
You're probably not aware that Arrival was a short story first, called Story of Your Life, lauded for its accurate portrayal of the nature of time and determinism.
It makes absolute sense, if you're prepared to accept the bizarre truth about reality.
Check my block list because you're probably on it.
