Not an intelligent movie

Almost every negative post on here gets a response from someone who tries to attack the poster's intelligence. Everyone understands this movie and that is why many people don't like it. It is derivative crap that constantly keeps trying to remind you that it is a "smart" movie and not an action movie. I don't think anyone went to this expecting an action movie but they weren't expecting a snoozefest full of plot holes and messages of globalism and liberalism.
It is not a smart movie. They release one of these "smart"every year around October or November:Gravity (Oct 2013), Interstellar(Nov 2014), The Martian(Oct 2015), Arrival(Nov 2016). They all get marketed as being intelligent film but most actual intelligent people find them flawed and lacking any true intelligence. I think the spirit of those films is summed up when Mark Watney in The Martian said "I'm gonna have to science the beep out of this."(I almost quit watching at that point) You could hear the low information/high ego people cheer because they thought they were proving how advanced they were and felt the movie had to be smart because it said it was over and over. That leads to the sad conclusion these low thought people reach of thinking that anyone who doesn't like it is stupid or only smart enough to enjoy an action movie.
These movies constantly have to try to hit you over the head with how smart they are, even when they are usually doing basic things. A smart movie will never tell you it is a smart movie and it wont have to be marketed that way.
If you guage a person's intelligence by their opinion on a movie you probably aren't a very smart person. It is prejudiced and depending on how you react to them very possibly proof you are an uninformed bigot as well. -

Well said sir!!
I watched this at the weekend - the usual - you hear the hype so you settle down expecting a great movie. Was so disappointed. Tried so very hard to be a smart movie but simply came off as pretentious in my opinion.
Watched A Monster Calls, a film that to me hasn't had that much attention. An amazing film that is both visually stunning and heartfelt with a belter of a performance from the boy actor.
Can not believe that Arrival got an oscar nomination over that!! -

Hype really hurts this sort of film - I saw it the day after release, before the hype really started, knowing very little about it. and was pleasantly surprised at what a small, intimate film it was, with a relatively narrow focus (unlike most sci-fi/invasion films) and an emotional pay-off.
Had I gone in
expecting
a great film, hyped up beyond belief, thinking it was going to be an intelligent masterpiece, with a twist and an emotional payoff, then my experience might've been very different because it would never have measured up to those heights. I still think it's a really great film, but best seen with no expectations. Kind of like Ex-Machina, if you expect a film about a robot uprising you'd probably be underwhelmed.
I haven't seen A Monster Calls yet but it's on my list, from the trailers alone I'm surprised it didn't get any FX nods if nothing else! -

when Mark Watney in The Martian said "I'm gonna have to science the beep out of this."(I almost quit watching at that point)
And that's what Watney did later, based on true & existing principles of science.
No wonder why you quit watching at that point. May be you are attracted more towards the fantasy aspect of movies. So, Arrival is perfect for you. In the name of Sci-Fi, they slapped the rules out of fairy tale fantasy world. It can please people of your kind as well as make them feel intelligent.
The Martian was a serious hard sci-fi film; not your cup of cake. Better start re-watching Harry Potter & LOTR series.

it was the fact that every other line was there just to proclaim it was a science movie, and how smart it is. a smart movie doesn't keep trying to sound smart just for the sake of convincing the audience. I have a PhD in botany and am well read in astrophysics, how about yourself? The Martian was full of flawed science and a lot of bunk. The farming would never work, the ending with the meet up was so far beyond the possible that it is within the realm of fairy tales just to name a couple of glaring inaccuracies in it.
you are the exact type of low information person these films are marketed towards. people should not look towards movies for "hard science" and watching one you think is based on it does not make you a scientist or an intelligent person. Enjoying a movie you think is based on "hard science" does not put you in an intellectually superior position to try to belittle others because of their opinion. Believing a movie full of bunk science is "hard science" just shows how gullible some people are. -

The only thing the movie and book got right was that water exists on Mars duh. The rest is just a bunch of bs. Taping his helmet won't keep him from suffocating at all. The dumbest part about The Martian was when he created that fire and he flies 8 feet away. Those are some bs physics, that would never happen. He would actually catch on fire instead.

These movies constantly have to try to hit you over the head with how smart they are, even when they are usually doing basic things. A smart movie will never tell you it is a smart movie and it wont have to be marketed that way.
Please provide specific examples from the movie and its marketing which constitute "hitting you over the head with how smart they are" and describe how the scenes or marketing should have been written differently to avoid this "flaw". -

Almost every negative post on here gets a response from someone who tries to attack the poster's intelligence.
It might be because most of those negative posts are like yours, empty and hollow, and just ranting about how this movie is "not smart" without providing any decent points for your "opinion". Negative posts are also almost always a frontal attack on the intelligence of people who do like this movie, implying that they are just people who like "to feel smart but are actually dumb" and don't know anything about movies.
Your post is completely useless. Nowhere do you describe in a decent and coherent way why you didn't like this movie. Instead, you chose to use insults ("derivative crap") and talking about "plot holes" without providing any examples, and projecting your own political bias about the world ("messages of globalism and liberalism"). You use also irrelevant examples using other movies, and write even more about that than "Arrival".
You just bring nothing here, except your own poisoned bias, unable to discuss anything without using "ad hominem" attacks, because movies don't really interest you, only the fact to feel "superior" because you didn't like something that many many people love.
If you guage a person's intelligence by their opinion on a movie you probably aren't a very smart person.
Says the guy who writes in the same post about people who like "The Martian",
You could hear
the low information/high ego people
cheer because they thought they were proving how advanced they were and felt the movie had to be smart because it said it was over and over. That leads to the sad conclusion
these low thought people
reach of thinking that anyone who doesn't like it is stupid or only smart enough to enjoy an action movie.
Fortunately your post tells me everything that I need to know about you. You will do a fine addition to my ignore list.
It is prejudiced and depending on how you react to them very possibly proof you are an uninformed bigot as well.
So that's mean you acknowledge the fact that you're an uninformed bigot? Good for you, it's the first step towards talking about movies and not about how people react to them, and feeling bitter and resentful towards art. -

So Nat didn't like this film because it does not agree with his politics. He could have saved himself many typing strokes if he'd just gotten to his little point.
But he probably felt good making his meaningless little rant.
Arrival in fact is an intelligent film. That's probably another reason he hated it. -

Not an intelligent at all, just something for pseudo intellectuals to pat themselves on the back for watching. With or without the politics, the story was full of plot holes and the writing was juvenile.
It is interesting to note the obvious anger you feel towards people who have a different opinion than yourself. You are apparently immature and poorly adjusted person at best or a flat out angry bigot at worst.
