Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Arrival

If let's say she waited a little bit she could have had someone else instead of Hanna and that child could have been healthy. She could still right her book she doesn't need Hanna for that. She and Ian could have had a good life.

I think the point in the movie is that she can see the future but not change it, which is why the aliens want help from the humans. They see their own future but can't change it.
      The movie was pushing determinism.

The whole point of seeing the future is that it's the future. It is what it is. Free will: out the window. Louise was always going to have Hannah. Ian was always going to leave Louise. Hannah was always going to die. Nothing could change that.

          It was a selfish decision.

Are you beep kidding? The question the movie presents is; is it better to have loved and lost or never to have loved at all? That is the question that's central to Louise choice. It's the same choice from It's a Wonderful Life. Sure, you might experience pain, but is the removal of that pain worth the loss of love?

Amethyst-El, I'm with you! If Louise could see the future she should not have had Hannah. She could control what she did. This film is manipulative piece of crap!

But since her new perception of time is circular and not linear.
If she changed her choices it would most likely alter the pats/ present / future loop. Part of how she solved the language was based on the visions of the future she had of her daughter.
At first we assume she has lost a daughter in the past; but its really memories of her future life that assists her in filling in the gaps of the language code; which feeds her sense of the future ending in her loop with the Chinese general.
If she changes the future then this would have a time ripple effect in the past/future non linier time spectrum. Kind of like the Reese / John connor time loop but in both directions.
But I think the main reason was she experienced the great love of / for her future daughter Hannaheven though Louise knew that it would cause her great pain and loss in the futureshe would have the great love for her daughter. To her Hannah is real and by changing her choices and saying no to Ion she would be in effect killing her daughter before she is even born.
