Not bad but overrated

I can't say that this movie is bad. But I can say that I think it's highly overrated. You have great, straight-forward sci-fi films like Edge of Tomorrow that don't do sh!t at the box office. But because critics are raving about this a more melodramatic version of Contact, everyone is flocking to it.

Edge of Tomorrow is a very good movie,.. Arrival is a brilliant movie. Is it for everyone, absolutely not. Too many folks around with minimal attention spans that get bored in a minute. You'd think people would read reviews about the movie before forking over their hard earned money. The reviews have been honest about the type of film this is, if you're expecting the standard action filled sci-fi flick, you have no one to blame but yourself. I'm not against the Edge of Tomorrow films, they have their place, but every once in a few years we get treated to a cerebral gem like this. Kudos for the production team for holding firm and financing this movie themselves, Hollywood, had they their way, would of turned this into another indistinguishable dime a dozen alien flick.

I don't know that it's brilliant. It is a surprisingly simple story which IMO asks less of the viewer than did Contact or Interstellar or even Edge of Tomorrow, frankly. The twist reveal is heartbreaking, but nothing a decent episode of The Twilight Zone, Star Trek or modern Doctor Who wouldn't have done. Amy Adams gives a glorious performance, the cinematography is artful and it's obviously nice to not have another Independence Day-type film telling the same old invasion story again. But there's not much to it, I think they could have pushed a more complex script on us.
