The scientists brought a bird with them to detect toxic radiation or fumes or whatever. The bird was chirping constantly. Birds use chirping to communicate with other birds (warnings, find mate, etc.). The aliens are unable to understand what the humans are trying to tell them, but they discern the bird (whose communications are much more rudimentary) is warning of a threat (because he is in a cage and scared of the weird stuff going on and thinks the heptos are going to eat him). The aliens take the bird's chirps (basically "danger!") to mean the bird is telling them the humans are a threat. The aliens initiate a preemptive takeover of the planet. In the final scene, a caged Jeremey Renner and Amy Adams are brought with the aliens to new planets and used to detect radiation or fumes or whatever.

Interesting take. But unfortunately a bird isn't capable of teaching it's language to another species I don't think theyre not smart enough. In the book the heptopods tell humans that humans are the closest species to heptopods they have ever met. When they said this they didn't say, but they look nothing alike, so imassuming they meant in metal abilities for such as solving problems and trying to explain their universe and existance

Interesting though limited concept. But next time, try not editorializing and telling us whether or not your idea would have made for a better movie. It puts people on the defensive. Plus, no it wouldn't (see what I mean?).
