They explained some stupid back-story to the early settlers dying, or some bs there. Since then if anyone or anything (sharks) die there, and their death was violent, then they come back as ghosts.
Some book explained you are supposed to kill the ghost with the object it died by. So they tried to use the harpoon arrow to stab it, but it didn't work. So they blew up the cave all together and it stopped it somehow.
